NBA Standings

Warriors: 37-13, 2nd place Western Conference
Spurs: 19-32, 11th place Western Conference

The NBA’s Western Conference is home to the league’s two best teams:  The Phoenix Suns and the Golden State Warriors.  Then at #3 the Memphis Grizzlies are making a strong case to join them in that distinction.  After that there is a 5 game precipitous dropoff in the standings to bunch #4 - #8 in a sort of mediocre hodgepodge… Then the hill gets steep and the drop off picks up speed.. The Phoenix suns are in 1st place with 40 wins and 9 losses… The San Antonio Spurs are 22 games back at #11 with 19 wins and 32 losses.  The Spurs are in 11th but are far out of playoff contention… they are even 2.5 games behind #10 which would technically be a play-in tournament spot.  It’s decision time.  The Spurs may need to actually do a full rebuild.  They won the NBA Championship in 2014… they have been shuffling all-stars and former all-stars on and off the roster ever since in a Rubik’s cube effort to find a winner.  It’s over.  Since Kawhi Leonard left the team in 2018… they have been sliding down that hill and failing in both trades and draft picks.  The desperation comes from trying to get some winners under the tutelage of Hall Of Fame coach Gregg Popovich… but it should be over.  They should do the unthinkable in San Antonio and start from scratch.  Get top picks, open some cap space and overpay for fringe all-stars… oh and buy Pop a Cadillac and a gold watch and ask him to step aside… in favor of a young coach who will develop players to play in today’s NBA.  (not now, at season’s end).  Frame the announcement as Pop’s decision… call Becky back from Vegas… and finally at long last do a full rebuild.

The Golden State Warriors have won 5-games in a row.  They have won 7 of their last ten games. Mid-January they had a rocky run as the team started to lose steam after the reintroduction of SG Klay Thompson and the tough transition to a new rotation.  Also PF Draymond Green fell onto the injury list with calf soreness (he’s still out)... and it took the starting lineup some time to adjust to Otto Porter Jr at power forward… but a couple of bumps later and they are back on a roll.  The clear second best team in the league to the Phoenix Suns.  They are a force again behind the splash brothers of PG Stephen Curry 25.7 ppg, and SF Andrew Wiggins playing like everyone thought he could all those years ago when he was taken #1 in the draft.  The bench is loaded with talent.  The front office is made up of smart guys.  Coach Steve Kerr is unshakeable having been a part of more NBA big moments than most guys who pass through the league could ever imagine.  This team is built for gold.

The San Antonio Spurs are on a roll of their own.  They have won 2 of their last four games.  That is a roll in San Antonio these days.  Leading scorer PG Dejounte Murray 19.4 ppg is the most unrecognizable leading scorer in the league.  You almost never see the Spurs on TV anymore.  Dejounte is also Questionable after sitting out last game with a left knee contusion. Overall they have only won 4 games over their last ten.  Beating the Houston Rockets and the Oklahoma City Thunder is easy, but there's also a surprise win over the Chicago Bulls in the mix… against SF DeMasr DeRozan who was on San Antonio last season and is now pure balling in Chicago to the point he gets dark horse MVP mentions.

Golden State Warriors vs San Antonio Spurs Preview and Analysis

Recent Form

The Warriors are 37-13 on the season, but 27-20-3 ATS.  They have logged 19 Overs, 30 Unders, and 1 Push.  They are 13-9 in road games.

The Spurs are 19-32 on the season, but 27- 24 ATS. They have notched 25 Overs, 24 Unders, and 2 push.  They are 10-16 in home games.

Offensive Analysis

The Warriors are 12th in scoring with 110.2 ppg, 3rd in rebounds with 46.7 per game, 12th in AST/TO ratio with 1.8. They are shooting 9th in FG%, 10th in 3PT%, and 21st in FT%.  The Warriors are ranked #1 in defense in the NBA while only allowing 102 ppg form opponents.  Those numbers will and have suffered a bit without PF Draymond Green in the lineup… but they still are #1 for a reason.

San Antonio is 9th in scoring with 111.3 ppg, 6th in rebounds with 45.9, and 1st in AST/TO ratio with 2.2.  They are shooting 11th in FG%, 15th in 3PT%, and 27th in FT%.  Defense is the problem.  They are ranked 24th on defense while allowing 111.4 ppg from opponents.  Scoring 111.3 ppg and allowing 111.4 ppg is an insanely thin margin.
