Georgia Tech - Miami preview and analysis

Last week
Georgia Tech: lost 26-17 vs. Virginia Tech
Miami: won 38-34 at Pittsburgh

The Miami Hurricanes are not going quietly into the night, and will try to push their winning streak to three games when they host the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Saturday.

It’s been a roller coaster month of games for the ‘Canes. Following losses to the Virginia Cavaliers and North Carolina Tar Heels, Miami responded with wins against ranked opponents North Carolina State and Pittsburgh to suddenly give Miami some life in the ACC.

Miami still needs help, but at 2-2, it does hold the tiebreaker over Pittsburgh at the top of the ACC Coastal and has winnable games against Georgia Tech, Florida State and Duke still left on the schedule.

The Hurricanes have been able to get to this point thanks to the play of quarterback Tyler Van Dyke since he took over for the injured D’Eriq King. Van Dyke threw for 426 yards and three touchdowns in the shocking four-point win over the Panthers.

Miami jumped out to a 31-17 halftime lead and had the comfortable cover by the end of the half. Despite giving up 587 total yards and 519 of them coming from quarterback Kenny Pickett, Miami did enough at run defense to make sure the game didn’t get away from it.

But not only are the ‘Canes likely on board to win this game, but they’re out for revenge. The last time the Jackets and Canes met, Miami was an 18-point favorite in 2019 but lost outright in overtime, 28-21.

But the Georgia Tech defense comes to Miami Gardens not playing its best on the defensive side of the ball. Despite nine starters back from a year ago, the Jackets have given up an average of 549 yards per game in their last four. Despite giving up only 26 points to the Virginia Tech Hokies last week, VT still erupted for 491 yards of offense.

Jeff Sims threw for 183 yards and two touchdowns, while Jahmyr Gibbs averaged more than 10 yards per carry with 113 on 11 touches.

Prediction

The way Van Dyke has thrown the football, this GT defense is in for a rough afternoon. The Jackets rank 117 against the pass this season. This should be a comfortable win for Miami and the hot streak keeps on rolling. Miami by 20
