Georgia - Georgia Tech game preview and analysis

Last week
Georgia: won 56-7 vs. Charleston Southern
Georgia Tech: lost 55-0 at Notre Dame

For the first time in almost 40 years, the Georgia Bulldogs are 11-0.

That 1982 team allowed 13.3 points per game on its way to the national championship game before losing to the Penn State Nittany Lions.

Just a hunch: This 2021 Georgia defense would mop the floor with that team. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will likely find that out on Saturday when the teams face off and close out the regular season.

The No. 1 Bulldogs are on the cusp of history. Not since the 1980 championship team have the Bulldogs gone 12-0, but that team also gave up just 11.4 points per game. The 2021 Georgia team has given up 7.5 points per game and have held seven opponents to fewer than 10 points. The 83 points allowed all season are the lowest since 1950 when Georgia gave up 65 points through 11 games.

They were running the Wishbone Offense back then, likely, and would still get ran over by this defense.

Georgia is coming off a 56-7 victory over Charleston Southern in what was, yet again, another solid day from the offense. Stetson Bennett threw two touchdowns, but did have an interception. Four quarterbacks combined to throw for 255 yards and four touchdowns, while the running game totaled 233 yards and four scores.

You focus so much on this defense that you forget that the offense is averaging 40.3 points per game, good for seventh in the nation.

And how's this for the books? Georgia is 3-3 ATS in its last six. The only reason why the Bulldogs didn't cover in those were because of the ridiculous spreads; -40.5 against Missouri, -21.5 against Kentucky, and -51.5 against Charleston Southern.

This doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, but it's a shame Georgia Tech didn't remain competitive this season. The Yellow Jackets started 3-3 after some very solid efforts against the North Carolina Tar Heels and Clemson Tigers, but a five straight losses has since ended all hope there.

The Jackets are coming off a 55-0 loss to No. 6 Notre Dame in which GT had only 224 total yards and two turnovers. Despite scoring at least 30 points in three of those five games, the Jackets have ran out of gas. It’s Old-Fashioned Hate, but it’ll be one-sided hate.

Prediction

The 35.5-point spread isn't as ridiculous this time around and it should be easily covered by UGA. The Bulldogs are on a 15-game winning streak with the school record being 17 from 1945-47. This will make it 16, and they'll have a chance to tie it next week against Alabama in the SEC Title game. After that, the College Football Playoff and whatever may come of that. We continue to watch history with this group. Georgia by 42
