Tulsa vs Oklahoma State Preview and Analysis

Recent Form
Tulsa was 6-2 last season, multiple games on their schedule were postponed and a few got cancelled permanently.  They ended play with an invite to the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl, where they lost to Mississippi State 28-26.  Tulsa was absolutely shocked in this season’s opener when UC Davis an 18 POINT UNDERDOG… beat Tulsa 19-17 in the non-conference season opener.  Tulsa is reeling and the last thing they need to do is face a good Oklahoma State Cowboys team with a powerful running game… but that is what is happening.  Tulsa is about to unravel in a way that will be hard to recover from.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys were 7-3 last season.  They finished play in the CHEEZ-IT Bowl beating Miami 37-34.  A close one!  They lost a lot of big parts of their team to the NFL in the offseason… but luckily the Covid eligibility extension has been granted to all players, so the ones that didn’t get scooped up will be back to try again.

Offensive Analysis

Tulsa running back Shamari Brooks has rushed for 2,700 yards and 23 touchdowns in his career, but it was RB D. Prince who stepped up and shined in game 1.  He had 179 yards on 14 carries.  A ridiculous 12.8 per carry.  QB D Brin was 15-28 passing for 201 yards, ZERO TD, and 2 INT.  They didn’t win.  They need to get stronger quickly on the offensive line.

QB Spencer Sanders will lead the starters onto the field for the Oklahoma State Cowboys offense. Oklahoma State has to fill some huge spots in the roster. RB Chuba Hubbard the star is off to the NFL along with him is star WR Tylan Wallace.  This opens the wide receiver spot for a half dozen guys to try and shine. Twin WRs Blaine Green and Bryson Green will be fun.  While wide receiver Brennan Presley will get his opportunities too.

Defensive Analysis

Last Season the Tulsa Golden Hurricane ranked 90th in rushing yards allowed 185.1 per game in the FBS.  That’s the type of stat that makes a Tulsa fan gulp when they look up Chuba Hubbard and his stats.  S Kendarin Ray led the team in tackles 13. He can’t do it alone, he’ll need some of these other guys to step up.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys defense was led in the opener by Malcolm Rodriguez.  The Senior Linebacker had 15 tackles, 9 of them solo.   He had help of course from D. Harper LB, T. McCalister S, and a slew of others.  Still it was only Missouri State.  And the game ended closer than it should have been 23-16.  The Defense will not be terribly challenged against Tulsa but they should step up and get those reps in for when they face someone tougher.  Look for Edge rusher Trace Ford to have a breakout game. They have a tough defensive line.

NCAAF Betting Trends

Tulsa is 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games.
Tulsa is 1-4 in their last 5 games against Oklahoma State.
Oklahoma State is 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games.
The Total has gone Under in all 5 of Oklahoma state’s last 5 games played in September

Key Injuries
Both Tulsa and Oklahoma State are located in Oklahoma.  A state and part of the country that isn’t taking Covid seriously.  That’s all fine and whatevers… BUT the NCAA will make teams forfeit if they have a severe enough Covid outbreak.  Both teams have had players miss game 1 because of covid protocols… It could get very serious and your favorite players could get yanked seconds before taking the field.  Your favorite team could be forfeiting instead of kicking off Saturday.  So between now and kick-off anyone on any roster including the coaches could be sidelined for this and any game.

Players to Watch
Tulsa:  Jaxon Player.  How could you not watch a player named Jaxon Player?  Plus the Defensive Tackle was big for Tulsa last year and is back.

Oklahoma State: Quarterback Spencer Sanders, The pride of Ryan High School in Denton Texas.  Spencer is a redshirt Jr and now is the time to make it happen…. Before that California kid Illingworth sneaks up and takes that job… Wait, you mean you gave the kid the first game because of Covid protocols?... and the kid had 315 passing yards in a win… C’mon Spencer don’t throw it all away over a shot in the arm.

Notable Quotes

"I've always wanted to be a head coach, but my family and I knew that it would take the right opportunity to get me to leave Waco. Tulsa is that special opportunity...There is a lot of work to get done and trust me, I'm already on it. Get ready for some fun, fast and physical football." - Tulsa Coach David Montgomery, Way Back in 2014!  Has he done the work Tulsa?
