Oilers - Golden Knights preview, prediction and analysis

Recent results
Oilers: won 7-1 at Sharks on Friday
Golden Knights: won 4-2 vs. Panthers on Thursday

The Vegas Golden Knights will try to win for the third time in four games at home against the Edmonton Oilers at T-Mobile Arena on Saturday.

While the Golden Knights are coming off a 4-2 win over the Florida Panthers on Thursday to improve to 2-1-0 during a season-long seven-game homestand, it came with a price. Vegas captain Mark Stone sustained an upper-body injury in the first period and will be listed week-to-week.

Stone was on pace to have a career year with 38 points through 43 games, a far cry from missing 45 games last year due to an ailing back that required surgery in May.

"He was in this morning, he's still getting some tests done," Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said Friday. "He won't play tomorrow. We'll put him as week to week for now and see where we're at once he gets back on the ice."

Even without Stone, the Golden Knights rallied from down 2-1 with a three-goal third period. Jack Eichel tied it, William Carrier gave them the lead, and William Karlsson added an empty-net power-play goal for the final goal. Keegan Kolesar had two assists from the fourth line, and Nicolas Roy added a goal.

The Golden Knights remain atop the Western Conference standings in a dead-heat with the Dallas Stars, while also holding a two-point lead on the Los Angeles Kings for the top spot in the Pacific Division. Vegas is 6-3-1 in its last 10.

"It was a competitive game. It was intense. It was physical," Eichel said. "Both teams brough it tonight. Credit to our group, we stuck with it. We were down a goal in the third period. We found a way to get a long 5-on-3 penalty kill. Then we found a way to win a hockey game in regulation. So, I give everyone credit in this room. Everyone stepped up tonight."

The Oilers are trying to maintain their spot in the playoff positioning. Edmonton currently holds the second wild card spot in the West in terms of points, but they’ve played 44 games, the second-most in the conference behind only L.A.

Edmonton has won two straight after losing four of their last five and are coming to Vegas fresh off a 7-1 win over the San Jose Sharks on Friday. Connor McDavid scored twice on his 26th birthday to extend his point streak to 12 games and has already confirmed that he will finish the season at a point-per-game pace with 82 points through 44 games. Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins each had a goal and two assists for Edmonton.

"Two pretty good passes from [Leon Draisaitl] there, so that helps," McDavid said. " … I feel pretty good, but it's about our group in here. We're continuing to try to lay good games down one after another and take it one day at a time, kind of like our second half last year."

Edmonton is 5-4-1 overall in its last 10 games, but despite coming in with minimum momentum, this is a chance to get on track. The Golden Knights have lost five straight to division opponents, which is very uncharacteristic for a team that’s dominated division play since it entered the league.

Prediction

Any time you get Eichel vs. McDavid, it’s going to be a fun time. Not having Stone hurts in this game, but I like how Vegas played in that game against Florida without Stone. If they can neutralize an offense like that, I’m curious if they can do it again against two of the best players in the world. Golden Knights 4, Oilers 3
