What an electric start to the NHL season. So much parity, so many good teams through the first 10-plus games, you have every right to be excited! Of course the Vegas Golden Knights and Boston Bruins (and the New Jersey Devils?) are heading the fun charge here as the top two teams in the league, because of course they are. But never count out the Avalanche, you know they're always going to be hanging around and will be eating worlds once they get everyone healthy. But this is a good time to be playing these hockey games, as well. Look no further than our own Doc's Sports on a 14-7-0 run over the first 30 days of the NHL season. There's also ASA, Inc. posting a 12-5-1 mark through the first month. You know you can trust our champion handicappers to get you across the finish line with your NHL bets. Oilers - Devils preview, prediction and analysis

Recent results
Oilers: won 4-3 (OT) vs. Golden Knights on Saturday
Devlis: won 12 straight; won 5-1 at Senators on Saturday

Another day, another chance to end the New Jersey Devils’ winning streak. If Auston Matthews couldn’t do it, how about Connor McDavid? That’s what’s on tap for the Edmonton Oilers as they visit New Jersey on Monday in an attempt to end the Devils’ 12-game winning streak.

The Devils return to New Jersey after a successful three-game Canadian road trip that was capped off with a 5-1 win over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday. Once again, another strong, defensive clinic from one of the best teams in the NHL. Yegor Sharangovich had a goal and an assist to give him points in back-to-back games after not scoring the previous six.

"I thought tonight was a total team game," Devils coach Lindy Ruff said. "We got production, we got a key short-handed goal from Sharangovich, but all four lines were in on it. I thought our defense played well, and again, our goaltender made some big saves at key times."

Right now, it doesn’t matter who is in net. Whether it be Vitek Vanecek or Akira Schmid, who made 25 saves for his third straight win.

"He's just looked comfortable every time he's been in the net," Ruff said. "He made big saves the last time we played these guys (4-3 overtime win on Nov. 10), and again there were key saves at key times. The breakaway save (on Senators forward Brady Tkachuk in the second period) I thought was a key save. This year's a whole different story. Last year we got a little taste. Then he had a good [training] camp, a good preseason when he played for us, and I think he's just carried it through."

Just a great run from the Devils, who have shown they can dominate on the road as much as home. Now they get McDavid and co. fresh off one of their better wins of the year, a 4-3 overtime victory over the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday.

McDavid did McDavid things, scoring the game-winner in overtime. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins added 3 assists and Stuart Skinner had a strong 31-save outing despite giving up two goals from Mark Stone.

"It's fun to play good teams," Nugent-Hopkins said. "It definitely is. You've got to rise to the occasion, and this has been one of the hottest teams in the League so far. So we knew that coming in and obviously we needed to step our game up. To get the two points against that team is definitely big, and we've got to keep that feeling going on the road here."

The Oilers have alternated wins and losses the last five games and have been begging for some sort of consistency in defense and net. They’re not going to score four goals every night, that much is certain.

Prediction

This is going to be the first test for the Devils in terms of playing a sound, defensive game. Defense has been very good the last four games, holding teams to two goals or fewer in each. I have faith in the home crowd and the streak lives another day. Devils win 3-2

Betting trends

Oilers are 79-76 on the road after 2 straight division games since 1996.

Oilers are 17-4 revenging a loss by 1 goal or less the last 3 seasons.

Devils are 9-0 in November.
