Oilers - Hurricanes preview and analysis
At the time of writing this, Derek Ryan just scored another goal for the Edmonton Oilers so clearly he is going to be carrying the hot hand into Sunday's matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes. But what a time for the Oilers to actually come in off a decent victory, having getting the win against the Florida Panthers on Saturday.
But as most of you know I'm not a fan of road teams having to travel on the second night of a back to back especially when it involves going against two of the toughest teams in the league. And while the Panthers may be on a little bit of a slide so far, the Hurricanes most certainly are not. And that is how I evaluate this whole situation when it comes to a rematch of the 2006 Stanley Cup final that the ghost of Cam ward will forever remain in legendary lore.
Should the score stand, the Oilers will have one for the first time in three games after giving up twelve goals in their last two games. Defense has always remained optional in Edmonton, but I don't think it's ever been this optional to this extent. The Oilers put up four goals at the time of publishing against the Panthers while somehow only giving up two.
I'm not sure if that says more about the current state of Florida than the current state of Edmonton, but the way that game transpired was probably one of the weirdest situations I've seen since coming out of the All-Star break. But the Oilers got a big win and they're keeping pace in the Pacific division. Which might be bad news for the other teams involved but that division is suddenly more crowded than it was before.
But if there's any team that is deserving of a role that it's been on right now it is absolutely the Carolina Hurricanes, who come into this matchup having won four straight and just ended the Columbus Blue Jackets 11 game point streak on Friday in a 4-0 victory.
Frederik Andersen pitched a 19 save shutout and Nino Niederreiter and Jordan Staal had a goal each to propel Carolina to its 36th win of the season and giving them 76 points heading into this game. You always wonder if there is at least one team that can at least snap the president trophy curse, you always wonder if it's going to be Carolina just because of how deep they are and now with their goaltending well intact.
This is going to be a matchup of two of the best offenses in the league with two teams that have forwards that will probably play for the next for the next 10 years or so. Obviously with Edmonton it's Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, and with Carolina there's Sebastian aho, Andrei Svechnikov, Martin Necas, among others.
I don't know if we're going to get the 2006 rematch anytime soon but I will tell you that if it ever came to pass for another Carolina Edmonton Stanley Cup Final, it might be the best thing that we've ever seen.
Prediction
That being said with the Oilers on the second night of a back to back, you know as well as I do I don't like it when it comes to that situation. Carolina is red hot, they're the much better team and I have no doubts that they will likely put a whooping on whoever is in goal for Edmonton that night and the Oilers defense is going to be in for a very rough game period because try stopping that group. It's next to impossible. Hurricanes win 5-2
