Season Record

Drexel: 0-0 conf, 1-0 overall (Colonial Athletic) // 12-8 last season
Syracuse: 0-0 conf, 1-0 overall (ACC)  //  18-10 last season

Drexel tipped off their men’s college basketball season with a home game against Neumenn (“hello... Neumann”) and got an easy victory 103-74.  The Dragon’s won the Colonial Athletic Association Championship last season and are hungry for more this year.

Syracuse began play with their own easy win in an easy matchup.  They hosted LaFayette for a quick 97-63 finish.  It was a college basketball game, but not a fair matchup.  The LaFayette Leopards never had a shot, they are one of those programs that gets pounded early by big programs for some good paydays. Syracuse’s first game was notable as the debut of Jimmy Boeheim and Buddy Boeheim as teammates.  They are brothers of course and sons of the head coach.  The brothers have a really old father.

Drexel vs Syracuse Preview and Analysis

Recent Form
Drexel is 1-0 on the season, but 0-0 ATS and 0-0 O/U… because Neumann didn’t make the board in Vegas.  The game went dark in the world of legal betting.

Syracuse is 1-0 on the season, 1-0 ATS, and has logged an Over.  They faced a very big point spread against LaFayette of -25.5 and soundly covered it by outscoring LaFayette by 34 points.

Offensive Analysis

Drexel lost some key players to graduation, but returned James Butler who averaged 12.8 ppg last year and opened this year with 16 points.  They also still have Camren Wynter who was team best in ppg and 3pt% last season when he averaged 16.3 ppg and 41.5 3pt%.  Drexel is scoring 103 pts a game, 40 rebounds a game, and 24 assists a game.  They have only played 1 game so all these numbers will drop across the board against Syracuse.

Syracuse will lean heavy on Joe Girard who opened the season with 20 pts and shot 5 for 5 from 3-point range.  Buddy Boeheim went 6 for 14, but he’s the coach's son and will get as many shots as he wants.  Syracuse is only 134-148 ATS when playing a team with a winning record since 1997.  However, Drexel doesn’t really qualify for that stat since they are 1 game in and it was against Neumann… a guaranteed win that never was given a spread at all.

Defensive Analysis

Last season Drexel was ranked 241st in college basketball in ppg allowed.

Last season Syracuse ranked 115th in the country in points given up.

COACHES

Drexel: Zach Spiker.  Coach Spiker has been the Head Coach at Drexel since 2016 and has a 61-89 overall record so far.  He took over a team that went 9-23 in his first season… He has steadily built the program year over year until he made the NCAA tournament last season.   A record his team holds is the largest comeback in NCAA Division 1 history when Drexel,  his team, overcame a 34 point deficit to beat Delaware in 2018.  It’s odd that he didn’t move up to a bigger program after last season’s conference championship.  He should soon.

Syracuse: Jim Boeheim.  Coach Boeheim will be an Octogenarian very soon.  He has been coaching Syracuse since 1976!!  He has manned the post for 45 years!!  He has won the NCAA Tournament when he was Carmelo Anthony’s coach back in 2003, He has 5 Final Four appearances, 10 Big East regular season Titles, and 5 Big East Tournament wins.  He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005!  He has 3 Olympic Gold Medals as an assistant coach with the US Men’s Basketball Team.  He’s done it all and seen it all…. And someone has to tell him it’s time to step aside.  It’s all gluttony at this point.
