Recent Form:

The Tigers are 4-6 over their last ten games. Notching 5 Overs, 4 Unders, and 1 Push. THey took 2-1 off the Toronto Blue Jays, got swept by the Los Angeles Angels 0-3, went 1-2 against the Cleveland (soon to be Guardians) Indians, and 1-0 versus the Baltimore Orioles.  Their Over/Under in road games is a coinflip 30-29-3.

The Cardinals are 6-4 over their last ten games.  Going 5 Unders, 4 Overs, and 1 Push. 1-2 against the Pittsburgh Pirates, 1-2 against the Milwaukee Brewers, swept Kansas City Royals 3-0, and beat Pittsburgh 1-0 to start it all off.  They slightly favor the Under at home 26O-32U-4P

Statistical Comparison:

The Tigers are 15th in team batting average .241, 17th in runs scored 550, and 21st in home runs 140.  They hit like a middle of the road, spinning their wheels team.  Their record bears that out.

The Cardinals are 17th in team batting average .238, 25th in runs scored 50, and 24th in home runs 134.  The offense is below average.  Firmly below average.  This game will be decided by run support from the lineup… Detroit has the advantage over the Cardinals.

Tigers Vs Cardinals

Game Preview:

The Tigers will start left-handed pitcher Tarik Skubal on the mound 8-11, 4.02 ERA, 134 strikeouts in 123 innings of work. Tarik debuted last August during “the Covid season” and only played in a few games.  His career averages are pretty close to his current season stats.  The 24 year old has shown promise so far and a current uptick has his ERA at 3.35 over the last 7 games where he went 3-4. Whether it’s a loss to the Los Angeles Angels (last start) or a win over the Baltimore Orioles (the start before that), Tarik keeps showing an ability to get more strikeouts than innings pitched.  If Detroit can harness that while developing this California Kid, they most likely have a keeper for the long haul.  He is leading the team in wins after all.

The Cardinals will start lefty Jon Lester 4-6, 5.46 ERA, 59 strikeouts in 95 innings pitched.  We all know Jon Lester a career of 197-117, 3.67 ERA, 1.28 WHIP.  He’s been an Ace.  He’s faced batters that have long since retired, seen relievers come and go, and has held his spot on a major league baseball team since his debut in 2006.  The 37 year old is washed up, he’s just not a top notch monster of the mound anymore.  He was added in a trade from the Nats to fill out this roster’s needs before his contract comes up at season end.  Then he will have to decide if he calls it quits or takes small money to work as a middle reliever in a place where 1 inning a night might be more of his speed.  When the late 30’s decline hits, a 3.67 ERA jumps to 5.46… which happened.

This will be a hot Aug slog between seemingly even teams. The pitching matchup and the play of late favors the Tigers.

Notable quotes:

"It's something special for my country, for my family, to be able to do this,...I'm really happy." -Miguel Cabrera, the first Venezuelan to hit 500 homers in Major League Baseball.

"I just match up pretty well against them… But, they beat me around pretty good earlier in my career. This is just payback." -Adam Wainwright, Cardinals Ace, on beating the Pirates and moving to 20-7 lifetime against Pitssburgh.  Adam had 9 strikeouts and no walks in the shutout win.
