Tigers - Yankees preview and analysis

Aaron Judge is cashing in with every home run, every RBI, every base hit, every time the New York Yankees win a game and become the best team in the American League. It's damn-near criminal that Judge has yet to get that new contract from the Yankees, but his time will come, and he will have earned it ... whether it be from the Yankees or someone else.

But Judge continued his dominance of destroying baseballs with his 21st home run of the season, giving the Yankees a 3-0 win and their fifth in a row. It's been a land of domination for the Yankees through two games against the Tigers, winning by a combined score of 16-0 heading into the finale on Sunday.

Judge hit his league-leading 21st homer on the very first Yankees pitch of the game and took it to right center. He's clearly far and away the leading candidate for AL MVP and whomever is in second place is off in the far distance.

But while Judge has been stellar, the Yankees' starting pitching has been even more incredible. They've allowed a grand total of three runs during this five-game winning streak, Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon took perfect game bids late into the game on consecutive days. Luis Severino did not get that far, giving up a base hit to Miguel Cabrera. But that was it.

"It was tough," shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa said after Cabrera's single bounced off his glove. The hit clocked in at 109.6 miles per hour. "If I didn't move out of that, it would have hit me in the face probably. It was a tough play. I moved to my left a little bit and it took off like a slider right in my face.

"At that point, I was kind of just trying to save my face. I really wanted to come up with it but it took a crazy turn," he said.

"It was a really good pitch and Cabrera is Miguel Cabrera," Severino said. "It was hit pretty hard."

Severino went seven innings, allowing just one hit, walking one and striking out 10 in yet another dominant performance from the Yankees' starting rotation. So far, it's been about those two components as to why the Yankees are killing it right now.

"It's like a rewind of the day before," Severino said of New York's dominant starting pitching.

The Tigers' offense continues to struggle despite winning that series over the Minnesota Twins in which they scored 12 runs while giving up only two. That tends to be a problem in the baseball world, especially if you're facing a much better pitching rotation like they have.

"He was very dominant," Detroit manager A.J. Hinch said of Severino. "He got us to chase when he needed it. We didn't hit a ton of balls hard. He pitched a great game."

Prediction

Jordan Montgomery gets the call next against Rony Garcia for Detroit, and if Montgomery can pitch like his counterparts, it's going to be a long Sunday morning for the Tigers. I think this offense will blitz Garcia and hit homer after homer. Yankees win 9-1
