Tigers - Yankees preview and analysis

What a dominant run the last few games for the starting rotation of the New York Yankees. One night after Jameson Taillon took a perfect game bid into the eighth, Friday was Gerrit Cole's turn into the seventh inning against the Detroit Tigers in a 13-0 victory for the Bronx Bombers.

“It was pretty exciting,” Cole said. “The fans were in it. I heard them chanting my name, which was pretty magical. It just means so much to us when we have them behind us. It can be such a force and almost will us to do better.”

It's the first time since 1961 a team has had back-to-back perfect-game bids of at least six innings or more. The Yankees won their fourth straight game and continued their ridiculous tear of 37-15 at this point.

"I think anytime you're a close-knit group like those guys are and you're challenging each other and learning from one another, I think that environment is one that you have a better chance to thrive in," New York manager Aaron Boone said. "So I think that's happening."

Right after the Yankees completed a three-game sweep at home against the Los Angeles Angels, capped with a doubleheader on Thursday, isn't just the only storyline of this. The Angels scored only one run in each of those three games.

Meanwhile, the Yankees have continued mashing baseballs. They have 73 home runs to this point as a team, with Aaron Judge reaching 20 this season with a solo shot in the bottom of the third. Anthony Rizzo also went yard, and Matt Carpenter also went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run.

“I haven’t been here very long, but it seems like every night we’re flirting with a no-hitter,” Carpenter said. “Gerrit was outstanding, just in complete control. Just doing what he does, it’s pretty special.”

The Tigers came back to Earth emphatically after taking four of five against the first-place Minnesota Twins, holding the usually-dangerous Minnesota offense to a combined two runs during the last three wins.

"He was in complete control of virtually every at-bat," Detroit manager A.J. Hinch told reporters of Cole.

The Tigers have been fairly solid against AL East teams over the past three seasons (24-20), but it's a completely different ballgame when facing the Yankees who look more complete than they ever have.

Too bad that likely won't matter.

Prediction

Luis Severino has looked great so far, going 3-1 with a 3.38 ERA. Beau Brieske, the starter for Detroit, is looking for his first win of the season. I don't like the luck of Brieske, against Severino, to bounce back after a 13-0 loss. Yankees win 5-1

Betting trends

Tigers are 6-15 this season as an underdog on the road.

Tigers are 17-25 the past three seasons after nine straight games against division rivals.

Yankees are 8-1 as a home favorite of -200 or higher.
