Red Wings - Golden Knights preview, prediction and analysis
The Vegas Golden Knights are in need of an absolute prayer given their current roster construction, and they will need complete effort in order to avoid their first three-game losing streak of the season when they welcomed the Detroit Red Wings to T-Mobile Arena on Thursday.
Vegas is dealing with some serious injury trouble right now. Stop me where you've heard that before. Markstone is week to week with what is being reported as a back injury, they are down one of their best depth forwards in William Carrier, all while still down two important defensemen in Shea Theodore and Zach Whitecloud.
but there's still enough talent on this roster to be good, but it did not show on Monday when Vegas got shut out 4-0 to the Dallas Stars and what was former coach Pete DeBoer making his first return to Vegas since he was fired in May. When you get shut out, you get no recognition of offensive stats and it was an abysmal performance by the Vegas offense.
"We didn't execute early on. That was a problem," Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. "So you're not making plays, you're chasing the game. … With Dallas in general, and the problem with our team at times, is getting to the interior ice. You look at their two goals after (the first one), they're lucky. They both went in off of (Alex Pietrangelo). Point shots, but they generate a lot that way. We didn't get to the interior."
The Golden Knights are 5-4-1 in their last ten and it seems like with every passing day they continue to find ways to be abysmal and lose a grip on their lead in the Pacific division and the Western Conference. Without those key names that I had mentioned earlier, Vegas is struggling in every which way for consistency at both ends of the ice. And until they start getting healthy bodies back, which might not happen until possibly after the All-Star break, then they are treading water at this point. It also does not help that Vegas has been one of the more disappointing home teams in the NHL, and that is proven to be not only a red flag in terms of consistency but a big problem in Vegas knowing that if their record was better at home they would be cruising in the conference right now.
The Red Wings are coming into this one losers of three straight and six of eight following their 4-3 shootout loss to the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday period Detroit is another one of those teams that was expected to contend for a playoff spot given the young talent they have and the strong finish of the season they had last year. But so far that has not been the case as Detroit still finds itself well below the playoff cut line.
Dylan Larkin scored a power-play goal, and David Perron added a goal in the third. That gave Detroit a 3-1 lead early in the third. But Arizona added two goals within the span of 70 seconds and that's what all was needed for Arizona to take it to a shootout and eventually win the game.
"The frustration is there because the effort is there, the want and the will is there from the group," Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. "It's just managing the game a little bit better."
Prediction
I'm starting to run out of patience with this team that wears gold jerseys because of how bad they've been at home. If they don't start to figure it out soon it's going to be a huge problem for Vegas going forward. Golden Knights 4, Red Wings 2
