Red Wings - Devils preview and analysis

It is my firm belief that the Detroit Red Wings should likely cease all hockey operations between now and the end of the regular season. They only have to play three more games, including Sunday's matchup against the New Jersey Devils. Now while I am of the mindset that Detroit should play as many games as possible to at least ensure some sort of positive iti heading in to another critical season for its young group, no one wants to watch this team just crumble under fire for the rest of the season.

And honestly the same can be very much said for the devils who despite winning three- 2 against the Vegas golden Knights last week, it has been quite the disappointing season for New Jersey. And I get it, the fact that Jack Hughes is not available for the rest of the season and hasn't been for quite some time, but the devils are just not that good.

And unfortunately this is what we're going to have to deal with for the most part until the end of the season. Detroit is coming in having lost six of its last 10, while the devils have lost seven of their last 10 into this pivotal matchup where something has got to give for everyone involved.

But we will give Detroit credit for this: winning four- three against the Tampa Bay Lightning last week has got to be right up there in this regime’s incredible short stint of victories. But of course, Detroit following that up with a five-goal loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins the other night and things are right back to square one for this franchise.

"When we are playing a team like Florida (Panthers), Tampa Bay (Lightning) or Pittsburgh, we try to keep ourselves in the game as long as we can," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "We did that in Tampa and found our way to a win (4-3 on Tuesday).”

The Red Wings are certainly re-tooling for the future. Between Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond, and maybe Alex Nedeljkovic, there is a group that is willing to be contenders for the future. And, of course, more draft picks coming in lottery form to ensure they have the assets for the future.

As for New Jersey, nothing has really changed for this group. After losing 3- 2 to the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday, the devils losing in overtime by way of a Seth Jarvis goal is about as perfect as a way to sum up their season by just coming up short.

Yegor Sharangovich scored And New Jersey has four games left to try and not completely look horrendous, which let's be real, you can only do so much as it pertains to a team coached by Lindy Ruff.

"I thought we had a couple of good opportunities, but we knew we were going to have to play a tight game," Ruff said. "We couldn't trade chances with them. I thought we had them where we could beat them."

To me, it’s just another day that ends in ‘y’ with this organization.

Prediction

I think this game has all the makings to being a 2-2 game going into overtime, and then a shootout, and then 10 rounds of a shootout to put it away. No one wins, and may god have mercy on our souls. Red Wings 3-2
