What an electric start to the NHL season. So much parity, so many good teams through the first 10-plus games, you have every right to be excited! Of course the Vegas Golden Knights and Boston Bruins are heading the fun charge here as the top two teams in the league, because of course they are. Red Wings - Kings preview, prediction and analysis

Red Wings: lost 8-2 vs. Rangers on Thursday
Kings: won 3 straight; won 2-1 (OT) vs. Blackhawks on Thursday

Did you really think we’d be sitting here right now talking about the Detroit Red Wings and Los Angeles Kings having strong starts to the season in 2022? Likely not, but there’s optimism around both franchises for the first time in a while and it’s different, but cool.

The Kings are expectant to have that kind of firepower after making the playoffs last year, but three straight wins and 19 points through 16 games is a pretty good rebuttal to everything. The Kings are coming off a 2-1 overtime win against the Chicago Blackhawks in overtime, with their goaltending allowing just one goal combined in the last two games.

Kevin Fiala scored the game-winning goal with 1.4 seconds left in overtime to preserve the Kings’ win, in which Jonathan Quick had 31 saves. One of them was a big stop in the final seconds that led to Fiala’s game-winning tally off an assist from Phillip Danault.

"I feel like we had so many chances. Just didn't go our way," Fiala said. "Hit bars, posts. We had so many long offensive shifts where we couldn't connect, but we stuck together and kept going and kept going, and that's how it turns out."

The Kings, in my opinion, still need to prove that they’re for real and last year’s playoff run wasn’t a fluke. So far, so good. It’s going to be a goaltending committee that will carry them. Quick and Cal Petersen need to continue to put forth these kinds of performances and give the Kings a chance to play to their strengths at the other end.

That’s almost like what the Red Wings are dealing with right now. The young talent is finally ready to take a next step, and so far the 17 points in 14 games is a much better start than in years past. But there are still games that bring them back to Earth, like losing 8-2 at home to the New York Rangers on Tuesday. The Red Wings had a 2-1 lead and then everything fell apart. The Rangers tied it in the second, then scored six unanswered in the third period – four in a 2:57 span – to give a reminder to the Red Wings.

"If we're not exactly at the top of our game, we're not good enough," Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. "I don't say that in a bad way. I think our guys know that. At the top of our game, we can play with anyone."

"It was 2-2 and we were feeling good, and then they get one and it was the same story as Buffalo (8-3 loss on Oct. 31)," Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin said. "The puck kept going in. We shot ourselves in the foot with mistakes, and they capitalized on them."

You really can’t say anything else after giving up 8 in a loss.

Prediction

I don’t think the Kings are putting 8 on the Red Wings, but this should be a good confidence builder for the Kings. This could be a trap game for them at home, but whomever is in net should play strong and give L.A. a good chance to win. Kings win 3-2
