Stars - Golden Knights preview, prediction and analysis

The Dallas Stars will be playing the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday, February 25 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Dallas Stars lost against the Chicago Blackhawks last Wednesday, February 22 at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas with a score of 4-3. The Dallas Stars currently rank 1st in the Central Division.

Jamie Benn had a goal and an assist, and Jake Oettinger made 19 saves for the Stars (30-16-12), who blew a three-goal lead and lost their fifth in a row (0-3-2) and eighth in their past 10 (2-3-5).

Tyler Seguin made it 1-0 at 12:58 of the first period for his 15th goal of the season, and Benn made it 2-0 just 1:19 later at 14:17 on a 2-on-1 with Wyatt Johnston.

Robertson extended it to 3-0 on a power play at 4:33 of the second period, ending the Stars' 0-for-20 skid with the man-advantage since the NHL All-Star break.

"We had a good start, and then we I guess sat back a little too much," said Benn, the Dallas captain. "They've got nothing to lose over there. They're playing freewheeling hockey and had a good second period there. I don't really think it was anything they did special; I think just mistakes by our group cost us."

Max Domi cut it to 3-1 with a power-play goal at 10:10 off a pass from Patrick Kane from behind the net.

Chicago scored the next three goal, giving them a 4-3 lead. Tyler Seguin nearly tied it at the end of the third period, but his shot did not go in until after time expired. Radek Faksa almost scored for Dallas with 1:40 remaining, but video review determined the puck did not completely cross the goal line.

"It's definitely a punch in the gut," Stars forward Jason Robertson said. "Every team is good in this league, so not taking any credit [away] from Chicago. One of those games where you make those little mistakes going east-west and gave up three 2-on-1 goals today, and that can't happen, especially when we're in this little rut to begin with.

"It's unacceptable and I'm sure everyone in here is going to regroup and get back to what (Dallas coach) Pete [DeBoer] wants us to do."

"Where do you start? You build a 3-0 lead, just got to be a smarter team," DeBoer said. "I think we are a smarter team than that, but obviously weren't tonight. Their power-play goal [to make it 3-1] gives them a little momentum, and you've got to be smart enough to kind of stop the bleeding there. Instead, we compound it with some turnovers and give them life that you don't need to give them."

The Dallas Stars have won two of their last 10 games.

The Vegas Golden Knights won against the Calgary Flames on Thursday, February 23 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada with a score of 4-3 in overtime. The Vegas Golden Knights currently rank 1st in the Pacific Division.

Jack Eichel had a goal and an assist, and Laurent Brossoit made 25 saves for Vegas (35-18-5), which extended its point streak to eight games (6-0-2).

"We're coming down the stretch where everyone has to bring their best every night," Golden Knights defenseman Zach Whitecloud said. "Not everyone is perfect. Some guys will have off nights. That's life and that's hockey. That's what you have 18 guys out there and a goalie back there for. We play the type of style where we play as a five-man unit every time we're out there. We support each other no matter what happens."

Jakob Pelletier gave Calgary a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 13:25 of the first period when he batted the puck into the net off the rebound of Backlund's shot.

Vegas was outshot 18-8 in the first period, with Brossoit making 17 saves.

"[Brossoit] was strong when he needed to be," Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said. "First period, they were doing what they wanted but we got through it. That's what you need good goaltending for. You've seen it happen to us in the past."

Jonathan Huberdeau made it 2-0 at 1:24 of the second period after taking a pass from Pelletier, deking to his left, and sliding a shot past Brossoit.

Eichel cut it to 2-1 at 14:27 with a snap shot from the left circle on the power play for his fourth goal in six games. It ended a 0-for-25 streak with the man-advantage for the Golden Knights dating to Jan. 22.

"It's a great shot by Jack," Alex Pietrangelo said. "It's what he's capable of. He's capable of doing that in a blink of an eye. There wasn't a lot of room around him, so he found a way to put that in there. That's what we need from him. We kind of need him to take over games."

Mikael Backlund tipped in a Blake Coleman shot at 16:34 to push the lead to 3-1.

Vegas limited Calgary to 10 shots in the final two periods and overtime.

"Getting the two points is obviously what you want, but I was very pleased with the fact we got into the game by playing hard," Cassidy said. "Matching them hit for hit. Winning our puck battles with what they did to us in the first period. That's important. You have to win those games if you expect to advance [in the playoffs]. … That is a bigger sign in the big picture. We can play in these games against a heavy team."

Whitecloud brought the Golden Knights within 3-2, shooting far post from the right face-off circle at 5:08 of the third period on the rush. William Carrier tied it 3-3 at 12:35, collecting a rebound and scoring from the slot.

"Will just gets hard to the net and makes life hard on the goalie," Pietrangelo said. "We feed off that energy. He's definitely an energy guy in the locker room, too. You see him on the ice. Everything he's getting now, he deserves. He's earning these goals."

Alex Pietrangelo scored 42 seconds into overtime for Vegas. Jack Eichel carried the puck over the blue line and dropped a pass to Jonathan Marchessault, whose shot hit the crossbar and dropped behind Flames goalie Dan Vladar. Pietrangelo got to it first and swept in the rebound on his backhand.

"I was right there. I was hoping [Marchessault] didn't miss the net because we would have been in trouble," Pietrangelo said. "That's 3-on-3. Sometimes you have to take a chance when you can."

The Vegas Golden Knights have won six of their last 10 games.
