What a strong opening weekend for Scott Rickenbach going 3-0-0 with his best MLB picks. Opening weekend definitely showcased some intriguing matchups in this very-early stages of baseball, but we know it's a six-month marathon, not a sprint, for some of these teams. The same applies for baseball betting and not getting too caught up with the sticker shock of it all. Rockies - Rangers preview and analysis
Well, as expected, the Texas Rangers went all in to get more offense but forgot how to pitch. That was the main takeaway of their three-game series loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, but the case could be made the Texas bats are going to carry them to a lot of games and keep them in a lot of them going forward.
But there's going to be excitement brewing in Arlington when the Rangers play their first home game of the season Monday against the Colorado Rockies to begin a two-game set. After the weekend the Rangers had, how can you not get excited for what's possibly to come?
Texas got into the win column Sunday in a 12-6 come-from-behind win in Toronto thanks to a six-run fourth inning that erased a 6-1 Toronto lead after three. Brad Miller continued his red-hot start with his second home run of the season and drove in four runs altogether. Jonah Heim also chipped in with a homer on a 2-for-3 day.
“It's just getting consistent buy-in and building the mental muscle of our hitters,” manager Chris Woodward said. “We have a game plan for each guy. We have some ideas and they're gonna get better. We've only had these guys for a month or so. We didn't have all offseason to really work with these guys. I truly believe as we go through this year, our offense, it's just gonna get better and better and better.”
The Rangers could've taken care of this series had they held on to the lead in the season opener, going up 7-0 before losing 10-8. It's going to be a work-in-progress for the Rangers, knowing they have the offensive capabilities to be good. Corey Seager is off to a great start with a team-high six hits; they could use a little more production from Marcus Semien, but outside of the pitching, you can't really complain if you're a Rangers fan.
But if you're a Rockies fan, you have all the reason in the world to feel good after taking two of three against the Los Angeles Dodgers this weekend. After losing the opener 5-3, the Rockies answered with 3-2 and 9-4 wins on Saturday and Sunday. Colorado manager Bud Black picked up his 1,000th win as a manager in the win, thanks to C.J. Cron's two-run home run.
“It's special. It's a lot of wins. You don’t just magically wake up one day with 1,000 wins,” Cron said. “It tells about all the hard work he’s put in. He’s a players' manager. We all love playing for him.”
The Rockies might not be getting a lot of wins like this during the season, but there is hope for optimism when it comes to improving off last year. German Marquez appears ready to be the ace of this team and can give them some stability in the rotation for once, which seems like it's been forever since Colorado has had that.
Prediction
I think the Rangers need some sort of solidarity in the rotation, and I think Taylor Hearn is the one to give them that. Hearn came on late last year and showed some serious promise with the ability to elevate up the rotation. With the home crowd behind him, and the way the bats have come alive, I think Hearn gets it done and the Rangers get a win. Rangers win 7-4
