Rockies - Giants preview and analysis

Well, this game wasn't as exciting as the one on Tuesday, but the San Francisco Giants at the very least bounced back and were able to squeak by the Colorado Rockies 2-1 in 10 innings. The series will resume again for the rubbermatch Thursday in San Francisco, with at least the Giants ensuring they have a chance to win this series.

Tuesday's hero Charlie Blackmon opened the scoring with an RBI single, but that was all the Rockies could do and that came from the third inning. Thairo Estrada answered in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single of his own. Outside of those events, it was a pitching duel between Alex Wood and Antonio Senzatela.

Wood went seven innings and struck out five, while Senzatela went six innings and struck out six.  In the end, it was Luis Gonzalez driving in the winning run in the 10th in a game that featured 13 combined hits, and the Giants -- slowly, but surely -- reached 30 wins.

“It felt great, I’m not going to lie,” Wood said. “I was really happy [Giants manager Gabe Kapler] let me go tonight. I’m glad it worked out the way it did.”

Wood threw 101 pitches and it was the first time he finished seven innings for the first time since last July. It's been a struggling season for Wood, but he knocked his ERA down below 4.50 and relied heavily on his breaking ball to get that quality start.

“It was super rewarding for everybody in the dugout because we knew he had that in him,” Kapler said. “We’d been talking about it for a long time. Obviously, there have been some challenges the third time through the order. I don’t think that’s any secret. He’s had a tendency to run out of pitches and then sort of be on the ropes the third time through. But he was able to actually get more in the strike zone, attack the strike zone even more effectively and efficiently and earn the opportunity to continue to pitch in that game. It was huge for us.”

The Giants weren't getting a lot of hits, as is usually the case with this group relying on pitching more than anything, but they got the timely at-bats that helped them get the win. Even a fielding error on Blackmon helped them in that endeavor.

"I thought we were actually having good at-bats up and down the lineup most of the night," Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. "Despite the fact that we weren't getting a lot of hits, we weren't scoring runs, we were having quality at-bats and attacking some pitches that we could drive. Luis' at-bats were solid throughout the night."

Prediction

Logan Webb will get the call against Austin Gomber, and the Giants have found ways to win games with Webb at the helm. Even if his ERA is at 3.82, he still has won five of six starts and has been one of San Francisco's most consistent pitchers. I see that being the case again. Giants win 4-3
