The Yankees won Game 1 against the Cleveland Guardians.  They fulfilled the betting advice from this column which was to bet on the Yankees on the moneyline…. ATS would have worked but we had to see what the Guardians looked like in the postseason.  The Yankees did not struggle with Gerrit Cole on the mound… and home runs from Bader and Rizzo.  There was a conspicuous absence of a homer from Aaron Judge, but he got on base through a walk.  Both teams get an unusual day of between Games 1 and 2… most likely to make room for National TV eyeballs… but still it is rest for both.

The Cleveland Guardians are average at the plate.  They have been all season with brief glimpses of better than average.  They hang their hats on pitching.  Guardians pitchers are good for 6th in ERA and that is fine… but without run support those pitchers will have to dig really DEEP.

The New York Yankees know how to score runs.  They come in second only to the Los Angeles Dodgers.  That gives the yankees a fantastic shot at the ultimate goal of this postseason… even if they had a terrible August.  The other benefit of wearing pinstripes is knowing you have a top-3 pitching staff: Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortes JR, Domingo German, Jameson Taillon… They can hang with most anybody.  The big story is of course that home run hitter Aaron Judge can change any game in the blink of an eye.

Cleveland finished the season 16th in runs scored per game with 4.31, 7th in batting average with .254, and 12th in OBP with .316.

The Yankees finished the season 2nd in runs scored with 4.98 per game, 15th in batting average with .241, and 5th in OBP with .325.  The Yankees have that great scoring average that has been built on Aaron Judge home runs and Giancarlo Stanton home runs… that is why the batting average is… just average.  Still if you walk a Yankee… you have to worry about him getting hit in.

Cleveland’s pitchers finished the season 6th in ERA with 3.47, 5th in WHIP with 1.16, and the fielders are 5th in errors with only 75 on the season.

The Yankees Pitchers finished the season 3rd in ERA with 3.30, 3rd in WHIP with 1.12, and their fielders are 7th in errors with 79 on the season.

Bet the Yankees on the ML again. Also add an OVER.  Judge and Stanton are due for bombs… The Guardians are due for a bigger collapse than Game 1.
