The American League Divisional Series gets underway with a surprise entry.  We all knew the New York Yankees would be here... They got the bye and have been having a great season.  Yet how many of us started this season thinking the Guardians would be here?... How many of us started the season thinking the Guardians would be in the postseason at all?  Also how many of us started the season calling the Guardians the Indians out of simple reflex and mouth muscle memory?  It's the Guardians and they are for real... But are they real enough to battle the Bronx Bombers?

The Cleveland Guardians have just an average offensive attack.  They finished 16th in runs scored which is literally at league average.  Cleveland's pitchers have been the star of the show... Top 6 in the league in every major category.  Manager Terry Francona would like nothing more than to get out to a lead in this series.  The opening game will be of utmost importance... and for a team with these numbers they will also need a fair amount of the ball bouncing the right way.

The New York Yankees have better numbers than the Guardians across the board.  They are 2nd only to the Dodgers in runs scored per game... and start a line-up with some very powerful home run hitters to rely on.   Slugger Aaron Judge finished the season with 62 homers... he captured the non-steroid home run record... which many believe is the true home run record.  He is good for a long ball at seemingly anytime... but you can't also overlook Staton... The highly paid mercenary that came out of Florida a couple of seasons ago to play the Dave Winfield role to Judge's Reggie Jackson.  Lots of people think that Stanton is not long for the Yankees especially if the Yankees spend this offseason dropping $40 million per season on a long deal with Judge.  However that is not now... Stanton has is a hard hitting postseason away from becoming a Yankee immortal and he has all the talent to do it.  The Yankees pitching rotation also has better numbers than the Guardians... 3rd in ERA, 3rd in WHIP... They scoff at top six.

The Yankees are heavily favored for a reason.  The Yankees are at home.  The Yankees are in the postseason.

Cleveland Guardians vs New York Yankees Review and Analysis

Recent Form

Offensive Analysis

Cleveland finished the season 16th in runs scored per game with 4.31, 7th in batting average with .254, and 12th in OBP with .316.

The Yankees finished the season 2nd in runs scored with 4.98 per game, 15th in batting average with .241, and 5th in OBP with .325.  The Yankees have that great scoring average that has been built on Aaron Judge home runs and Giancarlo Stanton home runs… that is why the batting average is… just average.  Still if you walk a Yankee… you have to worry about him getting hit in.

Defensive Analysis

Cleveland’s pitchers finished the season 6th in ERA with 3.47, 5th in WHIP with 1.16, and the fielders are 5th in errors with only 75 on the season.

The Yankees Pitchers finished the season 3rd in ERA with 3.30, 3rd in WHIP with 1.12, and their fielders are 7th in errors with 79 on the season.

Cleveland Guardians vs New York Yankees Prediction

Our prediction for Tuesday, October 11th is… Yankees 6 - Guardians 2

The Yankees get the home field advantage and the initial pitching matchup.  Bet on the Yankees to win on the moneyline.  The Yankees winning Game 1 in no means warrants giving up in the Guardians.  In fact the Yankees have been bad during the last two months of the season… so The Guardians have a decent puncher’s chance.  Still first home game in the playoffs is to the Yankees' advantage.
