Season Record

Guardians: 33-27, 2nd place AL Central
Dodgers: 39-24, 2nd place NL West

The Cleveland Guardians beat the Los Angeles Dodgers for Game 1 of this matchup.  That was unexpected but runs to form with the Dodgers' recent struggles. It toppled the Dodgers form 1st place in the NL West to second place.  An AL Central team did that!  The Dodgers have been plummeting in a way that the best roster in baseball should not…. Maybe they are not the best roster in baseball?... The Guardians on their part… are simply hanging around the statistical middle.  There is freedom in hanging around… They get bad teams at their worst and best teams at whatever… and always have a chance.  The fact that Clayton Kershaw got a loss for the Dodgers and pitcher Walker Buehler took Clayton’s spot on the injury list is a bad tiding for the Dodgers to say the least.

An inter-conference matchup between the 2nd place AL Central team… and the 1st place (tied) team in the NL West… Sound close?... It shouldn’t be.  The Cleveland Guardians are in 2nd place in the worst division in the entire MLB.  The Guardians will have to face a majority of their games against the Twins (good), the Chicago White Sox (bad), The Detroit Tigers (very bad), and the Kansas City Royals (very awful).  If not for the Twins, this division would be at home playing in the minors. **   The Dodgers meanwhile are in the National League’s most competitive division where they have won one and lost one World Series in the last two seasons.  They are trying to fight off the Padres and the San Francisco Giants who are both good to great.

**(Baseball is at a key point in history.  Only die-hards watch the regular season and only the occasional offseason is good enough to draw more than looky-loos.  It’s great betting… but outside of that… What baseball NEEDS is expulsion.  Every year two teams should be ejected and replaced by the two best minor league clubs.  If the clubs that went down don’t get to the championship?... they don’t come back until they do… If the clubs that came up don’t finish in the bottom two… They get to stay!)

The Cleveland Guardians have won 8 of their last 10 games.  It has been a magical renaissance that has lifted the Guardians from 3rd place to 2nd place.  The Guardians have good batting numbers and good pitching numbers.  Those numbers are built through playing BAD Teams… The recent 8 of ten was built against playing really bad teams.  So the Guardians put us in the position of looking very deeply at the numbers… Are they good or are they feasting on Guinea Pigs?  The Guardians went 2-0 against the Colorado Rockies (with 1 more to play), 3-1 against the Oakland A’s (who are my vote for relegation), 2-1 against the Texas Rangers, and 1-0 against the Baltimore Orioles.  The Guardians are on a 3-game winning streak.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have won only 4 of their last 10 games.  June has kicked the Dodgers in the butt firmly.  As has the injuries to 8 pitchers (Trevor Bauer is not among them… though he is on the list… he will never play MLB baseball again).  The Dodgers only recently got P Clayton Kershaw back from the injury list and then added absolute stud P Walker Buehler to the list.  Nothing has gone right in June.  Still they are top 3 in batting and top 3 in pitching in the league… So a return to form is expected.  They went 2-0 against the Los Angeles Angels, 0-3 against the San nFrancisco Dodgers, 2-1 against the Chicago White Sox, and 0-2 against the New York Mets.  The Dodgers are on a 2-game winning streak.

Cleveland Guardians vs Los Angeles Dodgers Prediction

Our prediction for Sunday, June 19th is….  Dodgers 9 - Guardians 1

In this series the Dodgers will have huge bounce back games.  In this game I am betting Dodgers on the moneyline and the OVER.  I am also betting double my standard bet to make up for Game 1 losses.  While this is a mistake in most games… it is not on the Dodgers roster.

MLB Betting Trends

Cleveland is 50-122 (-23.3 Units) as a road underdog of +175 to +250. Since 1997.
Dodgers are 745-373 (+44.7 Units) as a home favorite of -150 or more.  Since 1997.
Dodgers are 242-72 (+63.8 Units) as a home favorite of 200+ or higher.  Since 1997.

Key Injuries

Guardians: RF F. Ramirez (hamstring) Out

Dodgers: CF K. Pillar (shoulder) Out ** 3B E. Rios (hamstring) Out

Players To Watch

Guardians: RHP Shane Bieber, 3-3, 3.01 ERA, 75 strikeouts in 71 innings pitched, 1.16 WHIP.  The 27 year old Shane Bieber is throwing OK.  He made his debut in 2018 and has a nearly 2 to 1 win/loss ratio.

Dodgers: LHP Andrew Heaney, 1-0, 16 strikeouts in 10 innings pitched, 0.68 WHIP.  With so many Dodgers pitchers on the injury list the Dodgers are hopeful Andrew is ready to come off his rehab assignment and make some waves right away.  With only 10 innings on the season his numbers are not enough to register a real ERA.  Still, he is a quality arm that strikeouts more batters than innings for his career 644 innings to 666 SO.

Starting Lineups

Guardians: CF Miles Straw, SS Amed Rosario, DH Jose Ramirez, RF Oscar Gonzalez, 2B Owen Miller, 1B Josh Naylor, 3B Ernie Clement, LF Oscar Mercado, C Luke Maile

Dodgers: RF Mookie Betts, 1B Freddie Freeman, SS Trea Turner, C Will Smith, 3B Max Muncy, DH Justin Turner, CF Cody Bellinger, LF Chris Taylor, 2B Gavin Lux

Statistical Leaders

MANAGER

Guardians: Terry Francona… though Terry has missed 4 games to Covid… so maybe someone else… but maybe him?... It’s about testing and “shedding”.

Dodgers: Dave “Nothing to see here” Roberts

Weather Forecast

Sunny.  77*, Humidity 50%.  Wind at 9 mph. The Los Angeles Dodgers get lots of games in perfect weather… this is another one.
