Guardians - Orioles preview and analysis

The Baltimore Orioles have shown that, when possible, they can hit the long ball when needed. Saturday was the perfect chance to see that when the Orioles hit three of them and defeated the Cleveland Guardians 5-4 in Camden Yards.

The series concludes Sunday and the Orioles will try to win another impressive series given where this young team has been for the past few years. At the helm this time around is Trey Mancini, having one hell of a season batting .309 to go with five homers and 23 RBI. Those totals went up after Mancini drilled a 438-foot blast in the bottom of the first to match Jose Ramirez's blast in the top of the frame.

"I think when it warms up, the ball starts to jump,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “We kind of knew that was going to happen. There was a lack of home runs early and the weather played a big part in that. And now the ball was carrying. Trey smoked that baseball and (Odor) and Hayes, that was fun to watch.”

Yes, Rougned Odor also hit a homer, as did Austin Hays, and all of them came off Triston McKenzie who ended up going seven innings in the loss. Add in the fact that he walked three, and that is one of the weirder lines you'll see from a losing pitcher.

Oh, and he allowed three hits. All of them were homers.

“It was kind of a strange line,” Cleveland manager Terry Francona said. “He threw three hits and they were all home runs. He's been really good. Thinking these kids aren’t going to be perfect probably isn’t fair.”

The Guardians tried to cut it back after a two-run fifth inning, but nothing else came after that. The teams combined for nine hits and the Orioles went to the deep part of the bullpen. Tyler Wells threw 62 pitches in four innings with two hits.

"I didn't want to come out of the game," Wells said. "That's just the competitive side in me. I'm glad that Hyder was able to pull me aside and talk to me about it. That makes the decision easier, but at the same time, too, I still wanted to be out there."

Alas, he did enough to get his team the win. That's all you can ask for.

Prediction

I think the home team wants this series victory a little more, and the road team can afford that more than the home team. Orioles win 7-4
