Season Record

White Sox: 36-39; 3rd place AL Central
Giants: 40-35, 3rd place NL West

An MLB Inter Conference matchup between a couple of 3rd place in their respective division teams.  It all boils down to the differences in both the divisions and the conferences to figure out these numbers.  The American League Central is packed with some of the worst teams in baseball.  No joke, the White Sox are third in a division that has the Detroit Tigers and the Kansas City Royals!  Meanwhile the National League West is the toughest division outside of the AL East.  The Giants have to contend with both the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres… behind the Giants is the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies… neither are good teams, but both could be 3rd place teams in the AL Central easily.  Plus the Giants had 108 wins last season.  The Giants produced several quality hitters and pitchers last season.  The White Sox have what?.... A couple guys worth something and a roster of nobodies and has-beens?   Let’s check the numbers and really look at the injury lists!

The Chicago White Sox have won 4 of their last 10 games.  They went 3 Over and 7 Under during that stretch.  Highlighting an offensive deficiency they suffer from.  Sadly they are also deficient on the mound.  The names are familiar with SS Tim Anderson leading the club in batting average and 1B Jose Abreu leading the team in homers (with only 9!).  The injury list for the White Sox is particularly off putting because they had little depth to begin with.  They went 1-0 against the San Francisco Giants to start this series, 1-2 against the Los Angeles Angels, 1-3 against the Baltimore Orioles, and 1-1 against the Toronto Blue Jays.  The White Sox may be waiting for the return of a few players, but even when they get back they certainly have little to work with.

The San Francisco Giants have won only 3 of their last 10 games… allowing the Dodgers and the Padres to pull far ahead in the division.  Last season’s run was remarkable but few Giants fans imagined this fall from grace.  A key part of the fall is that the Giants did a lot with a little last season.  They were not the best roster but they got the best results.  This season Kris Humphries is gone, first baseman Brandon Belt missed significant time, and now SS Brandon Crawford is out. To make matters worse SP Anthony DeSclafani is now out with injury.  The cupboards are bare in San Francisco and it’s time to recycle the roaches.  They went 0-1 against the Chicago White Sox to start the series, 1-1 against the lowly Detroit Tigers, 1-2 against the Cincinnati Reds, 1-3 against the Atlanta Braves.  The Giants have not been this depressed in several seasons. It shows in their lousy play.  The hitting is better than Chicago and the pitching is slightly better, but the results are only slightly better.

Chicago White Sox vs San Francisco Giants Prediction

Our prediction for Sunday July 3rd is…  Giants 5 - White Sox 3

Neither of these teams has earned the numbers to imply an easy win.  The Giants have slightly better offensive numbers and the pitching matchup also favors San Francisco.  Bet on the Giants to get Game 3

MLB Betting Trends

Chicago is 1-0 against the Giants the last 3 seasons.
Since 1997 Giolito is 0-1 when starting against San Francisco.

Key Injuries

White Sox: 2B J. Harrison (tricep) Quest ** C Y. Grandal (back) Out 3B Y. Moncada (hamstring) Out ** LF E. Jimenez (hamstring) Out ** CF A. Engel (hamstring) Out ** SS D. Mendick (knee) Out **

Giants: SS B. Crawford (knee) Out, CF Luis Gonzalez (back) Out

Players to Watch

White Sox: RHP Luis Giolito, 4-4, 5.19 ERA, 82 strikeouts in 69 innings pitched. 1.53 WHIP.  Luis has enough action to get strikeouts when he throws… but he also allows hits that barely do better than a tee-ball stand.  His 5.19 ERA is shockingly bad.

Giants: RHP John Brebbia, 3-1, 2.70 ERA, 33 strikeouts in 33 innings pitched. 1.20 WHIP.  This 32 year old knows the value of hanging around.  He was drafted in 2011 with the 929th pick in ROUND 30!  His MLB debut was 6 years later in 2017.  He has been in the minors and in the bullpen... and now 11 years after his draft selection has amassed 18 career starts.  He will get his 19th against the Chicago White Sox... It could be great... it could be terrible.  The one thing we know is that John will never quit.

Starting Lineups

Angels:  LF Brandon Marsh, DH Mike Trout, 3B David McKinnon, 1B Jared Walsh, 2B Matt Duffy, RF Juan Lagares, C Kurt Suzuki, CF Tyler Wade, SS Andrew Velazquez

Giants: RF Lamonte Wade JR, LF Joc Pederson, 2B Wlimer Flores, 1B Brandon Belt, CF Maike Yastremski, DH Tommy La Stella, 3B Jason Vosler, C Austin Wynns, SS Donovan Walton

Managers

White Sox: Tony “friend to the dinosaurs” La Russa
Giants: Gabe “eyebrow and goatee groomer” Kapler

Weather Forecast

Partly Cloudy, 63*, Humidity 73%, wind 18 mph.  The same weather system cooling Los Angeles tomorrow will be REALLY cooling San Francisco.  Wear a wind-breaker… skip the hot dogs.  The fact that baseball fans still buy into the hot dog… when every stadium has better food options is bothersome.
