Cubs - Orioles preview and analysis

The Chicago Cubs and Baltimore Orioles will meet in a 2-game series in Baltimore starting on Tuesday with both teams coming in on a losing slide. The Cubs enter having lost three of five to the St. Louis Cardinals over the weekend with one game ending in a 14-5 result. Two of their losses came in extra innings, which to lose in that fashion as the Cubs to their biggest rival says a lot.

The Cubs lost 5-3 in 11 innings on Sunday night in a battle where the bullpen's supremacy landed in the hands of the Cardinals. Patrick Wisdom let the bats by going 2-for-4, one of only two players on the Cubs roster to have multi-hits in their 11 of the game.

"We were in that ballgame the whole game," Chicago manager David Ross said. "I thought Justin Steele threw a phenomenal game.

Steele threw seven innings of one-run ball while striking out only one, an indication the pitcher had a much better time than he's had for this season.

The Cubs even took a 2-0 lead in the fourth after Jason Heyward hit a single in the bottom of the fourth. Chicago even took a 3-2 lead in the eighth before the Cardinals tied it in the ninth.

Some things are just meant to stay canon, such as the Cubs' inability to defeat the Cardinals when needed to.

The Orioles have also dropped three of five over the weekend, losing three of four including two at home to the Cleveland Guardians did not help matters. Baltimore had only four hits as a team, with Ryan Mountcastle delivering at least a two-run home run. That was all, however.

They just couldn't stop Zach Plesac, who went six innings and struck out eight on 99 pitches.

Prediction

I like the way the Orioles have been hitting the ball outside of Sunday's debacle, and depending how the outsiders pitch, this could be the perfect opportunity for Baltimore to get back some wins and avenge from over the weekend. Orioles win 6-4
