What an electric start to the NHL season. So much parity, so many good teams through the first 10-plus games, you have every right to be excited! Of course the Vegas Golden Knights and Boston Bruins are heading the fun charge here as the top two teams in the league, because of course they are. But never count out the Avalanche, you know they're always going to be hanging around and will be eating worlds once they get everyone healthy. But this is a good time to be playing these hockey games, as well. Look no further than our own Vegas Writer off to a 14-11-0 start over the first 30 days of the NHL season. There's also ASA, Inc. posting a 10-5-1 mark through the first month. You know you can trust our champion handicappers to get you across the finish line with your NHL bets. Hurricanes - Panthers preview, prediction and analysis

Recent results
Hurricanes: lost 3-1 vs. Maple Leafs (6-3-1 last 10)
Panthers: won 5-3 at Ducks (5-4-1 last 10)

You'd probably expect the Carolina Hurricanes and Florida Panthers to be in much better positions than they are right now. It's weird I say that with the Hurricanes sitting at an 8-3-1 start to the year. But goaltending has hindered Carolina early, and the Panthers are also trying to recover with goaltending at some point. Both will meet up on Wednesday in Sunrise.

The Hurricanes had a four-game winning streak end Sunday with a 3-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs and their third-string goalie, Erik Kallgren. Stefan Noesen scored the opening goal, and that was the only goal that Carolina could garner at home. Frederik Andersen has gotten off to a very slow start coming off an injury that ended his season, making just 18 saves while giving up three goals.

"Tough game," Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour said. "I didn't think we were great, but we certainly weren't poor. We needed to capitalize on a couple chances. We had a couple good looks and we didn't score. That's the difference."

Carolina is always going to be considered a threat in the East, and in time, the goaltending will come. Andersen was a Vezina Trophy contender last year before going down and I'd expect some time in January he will get the opportunity to prove that again. But right now, the Hurricanes are in a good spot. They're able to score at will with the depth in the lineup, Martin Necas has become one of the better young players in the league, and they're still a group that will dominate you physically. Do not sleep on the Hurricanes.

The Presidents' Trophy winning Panthers are also in a weird position, off to a slow start at 7-5-1. This group is talented and getting the bulk of great play from Matthew Tkachuk, but much like Carolina, goaltending has gotten off to a slow start in Florida. Both Spencer Knight and Sergei Bobrovsky are hovering around .900 save percentages and don't look as sharp early as they were last year.

Florida did secure a 5-3 win in Anaheim on Sunday for a come-from-behind Panthers win. Sam Reinhart scored twice, and Brandon Montour had four points in a back-to-back after losing to the Kings the night before.

But the big thing here is Tkachuk will be serving the second game of a suspension for high-sticking Jonathan Quick on Saturday.

"We will have adversity over the course of the year," Panthers coach Paul Maurice said. "[Tkachuk has] been a great performer for us, great producer for us, and a fantastic player for us. We're going to miss him, but now we got to pick up the slack"

Prediction

Even without Tkachuk, the Panthers are a talented team that is in dire need of getting back home and winning some games. The Panthers can also benefit from having solid goaltending and whomever is starting, should get a good look at home. Panthers win 3-2
