What an electric start to the NHL season. So much parity, so many good teams through the first 10-plus games, you have every right to be excited! Of course the Vegas Golden Knights and Boston Bruins are heading the fun charge here as the top two teams in the league, because of course they are. But never count out the Avalanche, you know they're always going to be hanging around and will be eating worlds once they get everyone healthy. But this is a good time to be playing these hockey games, as well. Look no further than our own Doc's Sports on a 14-7-0 run over the first 30 days of the NHL season. Hurricanes - Blackhawks preview, prediction and analysis

Hurricanes: lost 4-1 at Avalanche on Saturday
Blackhawks: won 3-2 at Ducks on Saturday

The Carolina Hurricanes have a lot to learn, it would appear, in order to catch up to the defending Stanley Cup champions. Or, it could be the goaltending spot is really that out of whack after getting dominated by the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday.

Carolina will try to bounce back on Monday against the Chicago Blackhawks, who are surprisingly hanging around the first month of the year with a 6-5-3 record. I get that’s not the greatest mark in the world but at the very least they do look like they’re trying to be competitive under new coach Luke Richardson.

But the Hurricanes were completely overpowered by the superstars in Colorado. Cale Makar had two goals, Nathan MacKinnon scored, as well. It wasn’t even close to the Stanley Cup Final preview that maybe some were expecting. But with Jordan Staal scoring the only goal and Antti Raanta making 24 saves, sometimes it’s not your night with that kind of firepower.

"We need everyone really going, especially playing against this team, and we didn't have that tonight," Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour said. "It was a tough game. I didn't like our start. We gave them two goals in the first [period] and you're just chasing the game. Too good of a team to give them two. I thought, really, after that the game was pretty even."

The makeup for Carolina right now in goal isn’t great with Frederik Andersen out for an unknown period of time. It’s Raanta and Pyotr Kochetkov in net and that doesn’t really give me confidence against the likes of Colorado, who can outskate you to death.

But when Carolina has to play low-of-the-bar teams like the Blackhawks – even though they’re not fully low-bar right now – it’s a chance to feel good in this situation. Chicago is coming off a 3-2 win in Anaheim on Saturday that saw Jarred Tinordi score the go-ahead goal with 2:42 left in the game. Max Domi and Patrick Kane had two assists each, which tells you that line has been fun to watch. And when you have a lad named Arvid Soderblom making 39 saves in the win, you’re doing it right.

"Not the best game from us, but we've shown we are a strong team," Filip Roos said after scoring his first NHL goal of his career. "We worked hard out there, so it was a good win."

Prediction

This would normally smell like a trap game where the road team comes in and struggles throughout the night. This one, I can’t see it happening. Carolina seems itching to rebound after that sour taste in Denver the other night and it would be shocking for the Blackhawks to cash out at that high of a moneyline play when they have so much not going their way. Hurricanes win 4-2
