Flames - Stars preview, prediction and analysis

On March 6, 2023, the Calgary Flames will take on the Dallas Stars in what promises to be a hard-fought battle at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

The Flames are spiraling ever so quickly. They’re 2-5-3 in their last 10 games and are falling hard out of the playoff picture in the Western Conference. Calgary is coming off a 3-0 loss to the Minnesota Wild, their fifth straight loss overall. Jacob Markstrom, in the midst of a horrendous season, made 30 points and are six points behind for a playoff spot.

"I think it was kind of flat on our end from start to finish," Calgary forward Milan Lucic said. "At this point of the year, especially, you should be excited and have a lot of energy to play every single night. That's on us as individuals and that's on us as a team. As players, it's a big part of our preparation. Energy is something we have to create within."

Meanwhile, it’s a battle for the top of the conference with the Stars, who are hanging tough with the Vegas Golden Knights. Dallas made a statement with a 7-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche at home over the weekend. It was Dallas’ third straight win. Jason Robertson finished with two goals and an assist in the victory over the defending Stanley Cup champs.

"We're not planning any parades," Dallas coach Peter DeBoer said. "It was a really good effort, and now we have to keep building on it. I don't want to undersell the importance of the win because it's an important win, but that doesn't mean all of a sudden we're the best team in the league because we beat the Stanley Cup champions 7-3 tonight. We've got a lot of work left to do. We know [Colorado] is better than how they played, and we have to keep building on this for the next 20 games until the playoffs start."

In terms of style of play, the Flames and Stars are fairly evenly matched. The Flames boast a strong offense, averaging 3.05 goals per game, while the Stars have a solid defense, allowing just 2.59 goals per game. The Flames also have a strong penalty kill, operating at an 81% success rate, while the Stars have been solid on the power play at 22.9%.

One key matchup to watch will be the battle between the Flames' offense and the Stars' defense. If the Flames can break through the Stars' defensive wall and get their offense going, it could lead to a high-scoring game. However, if the Stars can shut down the Flames' top scorers and limit their offensive opportunities, they could pull off the upset and come away with the win.

Fans can expect a physical game with plenty of intensity, as both teams will be looking to assert themselves early and gain the upper hand. The Flames' offensive firepower and special teams play could give them the edge, but the Stars' solid defense and home-ice advantage make this game anyone's to win.
