Flames - Coyotes preview, prediction and analysis

The Calgary Flames will be playing The Arizona Coyotes on Wednesday, February 22 in Tempe, Arizona.

The Calgary Flames lost against the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday, February 20 at Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary with a score of 4-3. The Calgary Flames currently rank 5th in the Pacific Division.

Mikael Backlund and Andrew Mangiapane each had a goal and an assist, and Jacob Markstrom made 18 saves for the Flames (26-20-11), who have lost five of seven (2-3-2) and haven't won consecutive games since Jan. 21-23.

"I feel it's easy to kind of get hot, right, and we haven't really gotten hot this year," Mangiapane said. "We've had a couple streaks or whatnot, but not really long ones. I think we're due and we're playing the right way, and we've just got to play a full 60 and be able to close out games and play with the lead and win these kind of close ones."

Philadelphia scored the first two goals before Backlund cut the lead to 2-1 at 8:55 with a wrist shot short side through a screen, but DeAngelo responded to make it 3-1 at 11:31 from the high slot.

"It was a close game," Mangiapane said. "You can't take any team lightly in this league no matter where they are in the standings or whatnot. I thought we did some things well and we have to build off that.

"But I feel we've got to play a full 60. We've been kind of saying that a lot, but it's true. We let up a shift or let up a period and teams are capitalizing on us right now."

Tyler Toffoli cut it to 3-2 at 4:38 of the third period, taking a pass from Dillon Dube and scoring five-hole on Ersson from the bottom of the left circle.

Mangiapane then tied it 3-3 at 8:54 on a rebound, but Allison put Philadelphia back in front 4-3 at 11:33 when he redirected a pass from James van Riemsdyk at the edge of the crease.

The Calgary Flames have won four of their last 10 games.

The Arizona Coyotes won against the Columbus Blue Jackets last Sunday, February 19 at Mullett Arena in Tempe, Arizona with a score of 3-2 in overtime. The Arizona Coyotes currently rank 7th in the Central Division.

Connor Ingram made 34 saves, and Travis Boyd and Nick Schmaltz scored for the Coyotes (20-28-9), who are 5-0-4 during their point streak, which is their longest since a 12-game run (11-0-1) from Feb. 4-28, 2012.

Arizona has also won four straight at Mullett Arena, where it will play 18 of its final 25 games.

"I think there's been a lot of different things," Barrett Hayton said. "We cleaned up some things with a couple of practice days, our power play has been good lately, and we're just dialed in.

"We've done a really good job in here. We have an opportunity to play a lot of home games here down the stretch and we want to keep it rolling."

Boyd gave Arizona a 1-0 lead at 14:14 of the first period, redirecting Troy Stecher's slap pass at the edge of the crease.

Schmaltz made it 2-0 at 16:28 after causing a turnover by Jack Roslovic in the defensive zone. He scored with a slap shot from the right circle after Clayton Keller's shot from the left circle caromed to him off the end boards.

"We played well in the first, had a sloppy second period, but we battled through the third and got two points," Arizona defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere said.

Boone Jenner cut it to 2-1 at 13:23 of the second period, setting up in front of Ingram and deflecting Nick Blankenburg's wrist shot from the edge of the right circle.

It was the first goal Ingram had allowed in 147:08. He earned the start after stopping all 23 shots he faced in relief of Karel Vejmelka in a 6-5 shootout loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.

"We rolled with the hot hand," Arizona coach Andre Tourigny said.

Patrik Laine tied it 2-2 with a power-play goal at 15:07 of the third, scoring on a one-timer from the top of the left circle off a cross-ice pass from Adam Boqvist.

Barrett Hayton scored at 2:00 of overtime for the Arizona Coyotes. Hayton took a cross-slot pass from Matias Maccelli in the right circle and beat the lunging glove of Elvis Merzlikins.

"There was a little breakdown and we got a 2-on-1," Hayton said. "He's so deceptive with the puck that he froze them and then slid it over to me. He doesn't shoot a ton, but he's got a really good shot, he's sneaky, and today he was able to freeze guys and make this play."

The Arizona Coyotes have won five of their last 10 games.

Prediction

I wouldn't be shocked if the Flames were looking ahead to Vegas on Thursday. Coyotes 3, Flames 2
