The Breeders Cup Distaff is set to be contended on Saturday, October 31 as the seventh of the 10 Championship races (race 10 overall on the card) at approximately 4:58 pm ET at Keeneland Race Course.  The Distaff is the female version of the Breeders Cup Classic (in fact it was called the "Ladies Classic" for a few years before re-assuming the more traditional name "Distaff" again).  This race is no less compelling than the Classic, as it appears we will have virtually all of the top older female dirt horses as well as the top 3YO fillies competing.  And it could be a coronation of the great filly Nitrogen, who lost this race last year as a 3YO but who looks determined to avenge that loss and wear the crown in 2026 (or Tiara as the case may be).  Here is a preview of some of the major runners for the 2026 Breeders Cup Distaff:

Nitrogen - This Mark Casse-trained daughter of Medaglia d'Oro was considering taking on the boys in the BC Classic but thankfully for us her connections have decided to run here.  Nitrogen will look to make up for her loss in this race last year at Del Mar as she went off as the second choice but was beaten by Scylla, who has since retired.  Since that loss, Nitrogen has gotten better, winning three Graded Stakes in 2026 and taking on the boys in the Whitney at Saratoga, only to be narrowly defeated by the great Sovereignty.  Most people believe that this year's Distaff is hers to lose.  If she can do it, she will be Hall of Fame Casse's first Distaff Champion.  Regular rider Jose Ortiz should be aboard.

Fully Subscribed - Chad Brown's four-year-old daughter of Tiz the Law is coming in hot, having won her last three races -- all Graded Stakes -- including the Grade 1 Spinster in her last start on October 4 on this dirt track.  Fully subscribed is likely to be the second choice in the race after Nitrogen and it would give leading trainer Brown his first official Distaff victory (he subbed for Bobby Frankel when he was an assistant for him in 2007 and Frankel's brilliant filly Ginger Punch won the Distaff).  Regular rider Flavien Prat will have to choose between her and Splendora.

Eunomia - Like Fully Subscribed, Saffie Joseph's four-year-old filly was also sired by Tiz the Law and she comes into this -- easily the biggest race of her career -- off an upset win in the Grade 1 Clement L. Hirsch at Del Mar race track on August 1.  She beat some quality runners in that one and could be peaking at just the right time.  Joseph has won Breeders Cup races at big prices before -- like two years ago when he captured the Filly and Mare Sprint with longshot Soul of an Angel.  Underrated jockey Micah Husbands should get the call again.

Super Corredora - This filly was the winner of the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies last year in an upset and her connections may not have been pointing her here until she won the Grade 2 Zenyatta Stakes in her last start at Santa Anita on September 27 in impressive fashion.  This daughter of leading sire Gun Runner is listed as a possible starter in the Distaff as of this writing.  And if they decide to run her in here she will be attempting to become the first filly to win back-to-back Juvenile Fillies and Distaff titles since the brilliant Beholder in 2012-2013

Splendora - What would a big Breeders Cup race be without a runner from Bob Baffert?  At the least, it would be a bit less interesting,.  But in this case, the addition of Splendora potentially changes the way this race will be run.  Baffert's daughter of Frost Giant won the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Sprint last year in Baffert's home state of California and while a Filly and Mare Sprint-Distaff double is a bit unusual, it is not unheard of.  And in the case of Splendora, she has won her last three races (all Graded Stakes) around two turns, so Baffert and the owners obviously feel comfortable she can handle the 1 1/8 mile Distaff distance.  Flavien Prat will have to choose between this runner and Fully Subscribed.

Immersive - After making the 2024 Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies her fourth win in a row, this Brad Cox-trained daughter of Nyquist looked to be the best 3YO filly heading into 2025 and an early favorite for the Kentucky Oaks.  But Immersive didn't make the Oaks and ran only three times last year, winning just once in a September 20th listed Stakes at Churchill.  After taking last winter off, Immersive punched her ticket to this race by way of the "Win and You're In" Fleur de Lis Stakes (Grade 2) at Churchill on June 27.  But two third-place finishes followed that, so now the question is, can Cox get her back to her best form by October 31st because she will definitely need it.  Bet against Cox at your own risk.

Good luck, as always...
