Season Record

Orioles: 58-52, 4th place AL East
Red Sox: 54-57, 5th place AL East

An American League East matchup between the 4th place team and the 5th place team.  The earth will not move… the league will not feel the game.  The Baltimore Orioles have seemingly been on or near the bottom of the AL East for several years.  Lots of seasons pass by without anyone saying “hey, you catch that Orioles game?”.  That is something gamblers should like a lot. A reliably bad team to bet against!  Seems like a profitable situation to me.  However, the Boston Red Sox have seen better days. The Red Sox are normally a team that challenges this division.  They usually (historically) get spanked by the Yankees, but several times in history they have done the spanking.  This year is not that year.  A look above these two teams will find the New York Yankees at the top, the Toronto Blue Jays in 2nd place but not close, and the Tampa Bay Rays in 3rd place just behind the Blue Jays.  The Yankees do not have reason to care about any of these teams at their current perch.  So, when two bottom dwelling teams play each other… The magic is in the pitching matchup and the injury list.

The Baltimore Orioles have won 7 of their last 10 games.  It has been a real surge for Baltimore. In fact the last 10 games has allowed the Orioles to pull 4 games ahead of the Red Sox after the clubs being neck and neck.  They went 2-0 against the Toronto Blue Jays (with one left to play Wednesday night), 2-1 against the Pittsburgh Pirates, 3-0 against the Texas Rangers, and 0-2 against the Cincinnati Reds during that stretch.  The Orioles have had to dig deep to get these wins as they are an average pitching team and a below average batting team.  Right Fielder Anthony Santander leads the Orioles in home runs with 20 on the season, DH Terrin Vavra leads the team in batting average and OPS… which begs the question?... Why doesn’t Terrin bat 2nd right before Santander at 3rd in the line-up?... Why do they have him hitting 5th most nights?  A team that lacks firepower should not be missing RBI opportunities consistently… they simply can not afford it. Why is it the simplest decisions that boggle the mind?

The Boston Red Sox have won 4 of their last 10 games.  They went 0-1 against the Atlanta Braves, 1-3 against the Kansas City Royals (totally unforgivable), 2-1 against the Houston Astros, and 1-1 against the Milwaukee Brewers during that stretch.  During this stretch RHP Nick Pivetta pitched two losses and LHP Rich Hill pitched two losses.  The Sox rely on Rafael Devers and Reese McGuire at the plate… while Xander Bogaerts is still hitting the ball well.  The Sox overall are 6th in batting average… The problem in bean town is the pitching.

Baltimore Orioles vs Boston Red Sox Prediction

Our prediction for Thursday, August 11th is…  Orioles 5 - Red Sox 3

The pitching matchup feels like a test of your senses.  Both clubs are putting up a first inning tryout followed by a heavy bullpen game.  In that aspect… the Orioles have the advantage.  The Red Sox bullpen has not been great.  I will bet the Orioles on the moneyline… and I will parlay an UNDER… as 10 runs is high for most MLB games.

MLB Betting Trends

The Orioles are 1316-1604 when the total is 8.5 to 10 since 1997 (-179.5 units)
Orioles pitcher Austin Voth is 6-1 when the total is 8.5 to 10 (+6.1 units)
The Red Sox are 1-9 at home when the total is 10-10.5 this season. (-10.4 units)

Key Injuries

Orioles: 2B J Arauz Out ** Plus 3 starting level pitchers.

Red Sox: 1B E Hosmer (knee) Quest ** 2B T Story Out ** LF R Refsnyder Out ** CF E Hernandez Out

Players to Watch

Orioles: RHP Austin Voth, 2-1, 5.53 ERA, 54 strikeouts in 55 innings pitched.  1.57 WHIP.  The Orioles will be putting up a 30 year old with limited experience as a starter.  Austin is 11-9 for his major league career with 218 total innings pitched.  He could go either way… but his ERA suggests he will be a weakness on the mound.

Red Sox: RHP Josh Winckowski, 5-5, 4.68 ERA, 32 strikeouts in 50 innings pitched.  1.50 WHIP.  The Red Sox counter the inexperienced Orioles pitcher with an even less experienced guy.  This 24 year old also has a miserable ERA…however his 50 career innings pitched make that number less permanent than the guy on the other side.

Starting Lineups

Orioles: CF Cedric Mullins, C Adley Rutschman, RF Anthony Santander, 1B Ryan Mountcastle, DH Terrin Vavra, LF Austin Hays, 2B Rougned Odor, 3B Ramon Urias, SS Jorge Mateo

Red Sox: LF Tommy Pham, 3B Rafael Devers, SS Xander Bogaerts, DH JD Martinez, 1B Bobby Dalbec, 2B Christian Arroyo, C Kevin Plawecki, CF Jarren Duran

Managers

Orioles: Brandon Hyde
Red Sox: Alex Cora

Weather Forecast

Mostly Cloudy, 82*, Humidity 68%, Precipitation 20%, Wind 11 mph.  The humidity will be a killer… the temperature should drop at sunset… but won’t by that much.  Sticky, muggy, August in Boston.
