NBA Standings

Hawks: 17-23, 12th place Eastern Conference
Heat 26-15, 3rd place Eastern Conference

An Eastern Conference matchup of opponents who have seriously swapped spots in the standings.  The Atlanta Hawks had a great season last season complete with a deep playoff run that ended with a loss to the eventual champion Milwaukee Bucks in the Conference Finals. The Miami Heat finished just below the hawks last season and were eliminated from the playoffs rether early….. This season the Heat rises (so far) to find themselves 3rd in the conference; they finished 7th in last season, one spot ahead of last year’s champion.  The Hawks have tumbled… and not a few spots.. A whole LOT.  The Hawks are the 12th place team.  They will have to decide very soon if they are buying at the trade deadline to restore order… or maybe they sell at the trade deadline to keep building for the future?  These two teams played each other Wednesday night.. The result was Heat 115 - Hawks 91.  The rematch has come quickly… the result should be the same.

The Atlanta Hawks are on a three-game losing streak and have only won 3 games out of their last ten.  Led by the high scoring PG Trae Young, the Hawks can still score the ball.  Offense is not a problem with Ice-Trae on the court.  The problem is defense.  The roster has taken a hit on the injury lines and are either missing the players needed to play defense or missing the depth needed to play defense.  Over the last six weeks the Hawks have missed large chunks of time from PF/SF De’Andre Hunter, SF/SG Cam Reddish, SG Bogdan Bogdanovic, SG Kevin Huerter, and C Clint Capela. That is just outright too many quality players missing games.  The result has been a quick fall off a steep cliff.  They now share a place in the standings with some of the worst teams in the league that are waiting for the draft lottery to provide relief.  That isn’t where they belong… it is where they are.   An eagle-eye’s view of the season overall would tell you that the hawks can catch-up and can still do damage in the playoffs, but the FEEL is that the Chicago Bulls and the Charlotte Hornets have stolen their thunder.  There are new, young, exciting teams on the scene and the Hawks may be yesterday’s news… like the Boston Celtics.

The Miami Heat are so hot right now!  They are on a 3-game winning streak and have won 8 of their last ten games.  They are also 4-0 ATS over their last 4 games. The Heat beat the Hawks last game… not the last time they played but literally in their last game… switching gyms won’t switch the mismatch that injuries have created…. The last two teams to beat the Heat (the losses are few and far between) were the Golden State Warriors and the Sacramento Kings… the Warriors are almost the best team in basketball while the Kings were a fluke.
