Hawks - Nets preview, prediction and analysis

Hawks analysis

Things are about to get a little bit bumpy for the Atlanta Hawks over the next couple of weeks. Having already been without young forward John Collins, now comes the part where Atlanta has to figure out what to do without Dejounte Murray in the lineup. Murray injured his ankle on Wednesday in the 113-89 loss to the New York Knicks and we'll be out for at least the next 2-4 weeks. So now it’s up to Trae Young to try and salvage things before they go haywire. Given how the last two games have gone, who knows if that’s possible?

Atlanta has lost five of its last seven, including the last two against the Oklahoma City Thunder and the New York Knicks. In addition, Atlanta has also failed to cover in seven of its last 10. So there's a lot to be desired right now when it comes to Atlanta especially now that two of their top players are injured. Due to the fact that both of them are hurt, that takes a huge chunk of Atlanta’s offense out and puts it on the shelf. Which seems to be a good time for the under to come into play. The under is 5-1 in the Hawks’ last six games after they failed to cover. In addition, Atlanta is 6-20 against the spread in their last 26 road games against teams with a home winning percentage greater than .600.

On top of the fact that young is now dealing with an illness on top of all these injuries, Atlanta is looking to be in pretty bad shape right now. When you consider how well Brooklyn has played over the last number of games, this seems like easy pickings for the home team.

Nets analysis

I never thought I would actually see it, but the Brooklyn Nets are actually a good basketball team again. Just when you thought we were about to throw some dirt on them, Brooklyn comes into the Friday matchup against Atlanta having won five of its last six and seven of its last ten. That doesn't necessarily mean the Nets have been good against the spread either. In their last five games alone, Brooklyn finds itself at 1-3-1 against the spread in their last five. One of those losses came Wednesday against the Charlotte Hornets in a 122-116 victory.

Brooklyn was actually favored by 10.5 points going against Charlotte. Considering how they needed to bounce back after losing 103-92 to the Boston Celtics earlier in the week, and was even getting 2.5 points in that game, the Nets were rebounded nicely to find themselves enough offense to get a victory. Because anytime Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant combined for 62 points and shoot better than 50% from the floor, sometimes that's all you need in order to actually when a much needed game.

The under has been Brooklyn's best friend as of late. For example, the under has cashed in four straight times after Brooklyn has won outright. I'm not sure if we're in a position to determine if this will be a low scoring game, but it should be rather entertaining.

Prediction

the injuries and the lack of scoring depth is going to hurt Atlanta in the short term. Until Collins gets back and helps in that department, this might as well be a ridiculous boss battle. Brooklyn by double digits. Nets by 14
