Falcons - Seahawks preview, analysis and prediction

Last week
Falcons: lost 31-27 at Rams
Seahawks: lost 27-7 at 49ers

It’s a near pick-‘em on Sunday in Seattle when the Atlanta Falcons take on the Seattle Seahawks. Also, meaning this might be the worst game on the schedule and if you have an inkling for an under this week, this might be it.

It was a rough week for the Falcons and Seahawks, but for completely different reasons on the spectrum. The Falcons were down 28-3 (where in the world have you heard that one before?) but made a comeback before losing 31-27 to the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.

Marcus Mariota’s renaissance comeback still hasn’t resulted in a win yet, but he did throw two touchdowns and two interceptions against the Rams. One of those touchdowns went to first-round pick Drake London for his first touchdown in the NFL, but it just wasn’t enough with back-to-back close losses for the Falcons.

"That's on me, I've got to do a better job of communicating that across the board," said Mariota, who threw the clinching interception to Jalen Ramsey in the endzone, not without an athletic play from the All-Pro corner. "I think, kind of throughout the game I could have done a better job operationally and just communicating with the guys so that everybody's on the same page."

One of the big concerns for the Falcons right now offensively is not getting tight end Kyle Pitts involved in the passing game. Through two games, last year’s first-round pick has a grand total of four receptions for 38 yards. That’s nowhere good enough. Part of that has to be on Mariota and the other has to be on the coaching staff not getting him involved. Also for the sake of my fantasy team, get him some touches, Atlanta.

To say that it’s been a disappointing ride for the Falcons since blowing that 28-3 lead in the Super Bowl to the Patriots would be an understatement. Atlanta is a staggering 11-24 in its last 35 games and are 6-18 when labeled as an underdog in that time. The Falcons blew everything up and it seems like the rebuild is going to be a lengthy, agonizing process.

The rebuild didn’t look too bad for Seattle coming off that win against Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos, but the Seahawks did crash back to Earth very hard in a 27-7 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara last week. Geno Smith, God bless him, completed 24 of 30 for 197 yards and an interception. He could not overcome the magic that was Jimmy G and the Niners. Tyler Lockett had nine catches for 107 yards.

Seattle was one-dimensional for most of the afternoon, putting together just 14 total carries for 36 yards. Rashaad Penny had just six carries for 15 yards.

"Quite a distance from one week to the next," coach Pete Carroll. "This league just reminds you how you get humbled. We didn't do anything like we wanted to today at the line of scrimmage, on either side of the ball."

The Seahawks are still a strong team at home, having won 14 of their last 23. And if Week 1 is any indication, it can still be a strong place to play. Whether Atlanta can actually carry that momentum remains to be seen.

Prediction

When in doubt, take the 12th man. Atlanta’s defense is still highly questionable at this point and I think they won’t be able to handle the dangerous confines of Seattle. Seahawks by 13
