Season Record

D-Backs: 39-51, 5th place NL West
Padres: 51-41, 2nd place NL West

A National League matchup between the worst in the NL West and the second best on the NL West on the last day of MLB betting before the All-Star break.  Before you go and bet on the Padres immediately… Please avoid the chalk eating and look into the numbers with me.  Head to head with the D-Backs the Padres are 24-15 over the last 3 seasons… while that is a winning number… remember the D-Backs have been in last place the whole time… and were still able to beat the Padres 15 times.  (we may end up betting the Padres, this is just for finding the right bet in this game).  The Padres are heavily favored because they have gone 4-0 against Arizona this season AT HOME… but it was the D-Backs taking 2 games from the Padres in Arizona that helped the Los Angeles Dodgers pull away from the Padres for sole claim of first place.   So what am I saying?.... Well in the last chance to bet baseball for a few days (you can bet the All-Star game)... let’s see what the numbers say before you do.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have won 4 of their last 10 games. 5 Overs and 5 Unders.  Nothing spectacular, nothing egregious.  In the span the D-Backs had 4 losses by a single run.  The D-Backs are the type of team that hangs in there but ultimately loses.  The problem can be found in a lineup that's 28th in batting average and 25th in OBP… Numbers that spell doom unless they were a great pitching team… they are not.  They went 1-2 against the San Francisco Giants, 1-3 against the Colorado Rockies, and 2-1 against the San Francisco Giants. It has been a span of all NL West teams and it has been disastrous.  Very telling of the Diamondbacks struggles is their batting average leader is Josh Rojas who hits .276 which is a good number for the 3rd best batter on a good team.

The San Diego Padres have won only 3 of their last 10 games.  It has been a terrible fall for a team that was ½ a game away from the 1st place Dodgers as recently as 3 weeks ago.  They are now 9.5 games back. We always see a collapse like this from the Padres.  Apologists will remind you that they have been without SS and big bat Fernando Tatis Jr all season.  Also super star 3B Manny Machado missed some time, returned, missed some more time and has returned again.  That only highlights the troubles… The Padres are not very deep.  Missing a guy here or there… like LF Jurickson Profar (concussion) who is a quality player who last played July 7th (and may return for this game) demonstrates how little talent is waiting in the wings as all the available money is being spent on Machado and saved for extending Fernando Tatis Jr.  This team needs a splash of cold water to the face… will they get it against the Diamondbacks?

Weather Forecast

Partly Cloudy, 73*, Humidity 79%, chance of precipitation 20%, wind 9 mph.  Cool air will sweep off the mighty Pacific Ocean which is only steps away from the Stadium.  It will be a beautiful day for baseball… The heavy, humid air will smother a few home runs until they end up being just pop ups… but those are the breaks.
