Season Record

Padres: 41-27, 2nd place National League West
Diamondbacks: 32-36, 4th place National League West

Game 2 of this series on Tuesday Night.  Game 1 will be played Monday night and will lack many surprises.  Game 2 should have an electric pitching matchup between young stud Zac Gallen of the Diamondbacks and rising pro Sean Manaea of the Padres… The problem for the Diamondbacks will become readily apparent when both clubs yield to the bullpen.  The Padres are simply better and the D-Backs are grossly empty.

A National League West matchup between class and trash.  The San Diego Padres have been pressing the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the NL West.  They actually have 1 more win than the Dodgers, but since they have played 3 more games… They have two more losses and are stuck a ½ game back in the standings.  The Diamondbacks are not the worst in the National League West despite their 5 games below .500 record as they have the Colorado Rockies below them.  The Rockies are a great team to get easy wins off of for everyone else in the NL West, but the Diamondbacks should want more than a 4th place finish.  A series against the Diamondbacks is juicy fun for the Padres… They really do envision getting a quick sweep to vault into first place.  A series against the Padres is a waking nightmare for the Diamondbacks as they really do envision someday not being junk. A three game series in San Diego!  Let’s check the numbers and make some money!

Home field advantage is a big deal in this matchup.  The Padres play well at home and the Diamondbacks play badly on the road.  The Padres offense is also a big deal as they recently “pelted” the Chicago Cubs 19-5.  When the Padres get going the bases get a lot of footprints.  In that game Manny Machado “MR 300 million” got his 1500th hit with a single and added a two run homer.  Hitters like Jake Cronenworth and Jurickson Profar are a plus for this line-up… all the while everyone is waiting for Fernando Tatis Jr to come back to form after a long injury stint to lead this team to the promised land.  Meanwhile the Diamondbacks have to rely on pitching… it is a must!  The Diamondbacks do not get the run support of the Padres by a longshot.

The San Diego Padres have won 6 of their last ten games.  Their weakness has been the awful Colorado Rockies!  That is the problem with being a good team in a great Division.  They went 2-2 against the Colorado Rockies, 4-0 in a SWEEP of the Chicago Cubs and the 0-2 against the Colorado Rockies again.  To let the Colorado Rockies walk all over the Padres over the last ten games… literally destroyed the Padres chances at being in first place.  This is the problem with the Padres… great team, great hitting… OK pitching… and desperately waiting for focus and urgency from their entire roster.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have won 5 of their last 10 games.  Going .500 over the occasional ten game stretch is literally what has kept this franchise as close as 10.5 games back.  It’s a long season… and maybe they can make some waves?  They went 2-0 against the Cincinnati Reds, 1-2 against the Philadelphia Phillies, 1-2 against the Cincinnati Reds, and 1-1 against the Minnesota Twins. The Diamondbacks got slapped by the Twins from a HUGE home run ball hit by the Twin's Gary Sanchez… A 456 foot doozy!   It led to a full crumple of the Diamondbacks spirit and an 11-1 win by the Twins.  This is a problem if the Diamondbacks expect to hold off the Padres.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs San Diego Padres Preview and Analysis

Offensive Analysis

The Padres are 15th in scoring with 4.39 runs per game, 22nd in batting average with .234, 18th in OBP with .311.

The Diamondbacks are 22nd in scoring with 4.11 runs per game, 28th in batting average with .219, and 25th in OBP with .299.  They supply run support only in the rare instance that some else is having a bad game.

Defensive Analysis

The Padres pitchers are 5th in ERA with 3.31, 4th in WHIP with 1.13, and the fielders are ranked 1st in (best) in errors with only 21 on the season so far.

The Diamondback pitchers are 22nd in ERA with 4.19, 21st in WHIP with 1.32, and in fielding errors they are the pits with 25th and 45 on the season so far. IT gets hard to field a ball when they are always coming at you.
