Diamondbacks - Marlins preview and analysis

The Arizona Diamondbacks are apparently not going anywhere any time soon? Maybe it’s too early to determine such wild proclamations? Maybe there are too many questions marks that include this question mark marking the question?

If that made any sense to you, you are awesome.

But never mind that. At the time of writing this, the D-Backs have a 5-2 lead on the Miami Marlins and if things progress this way, they should win yet again and move within another game of .500 baseball, while the Marlins drop two straight after losing to the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.

One look at the box score and it doesn’t take much to see where Arizona has gotten off to a strong start. The top three batters in the order – Daulton Varsho, David Peralta and Jordan Luplow – all registered at least two hits, with Luplow and Peralta combining for all five RBI.

And funny, as I write this, the Marlins cut it to 5-4 after a four-run seventh inning. You’re likely going to see some hilarity ensue by the time this finally goes live. If you prefer this funny content from all of us, please make sure you’re following our site daily for picks and insane analysis like this one.

But the Diamondbacks continue to surprise everyone with their timely hitting and decent pitching outside of Madison Bumgarner. Zac Gallen went 6.1 innings and had five strikeouts, but his night ended on a two-run double from Jazz Chisholm. Jesus Aguilar came in and drew two more runs in to cut the lead closer.

But the key here on Monday was Peralta and Luplow. The 28-year-old Luplow, who entered this season with 92 RBI in over 600 at-bats, he has five RBI and two homers in just 19 at-bats this year. We’re not saying that he’s going to be the breakout candidate Arizona needs for this offense considering they’ll get anyone they can get to put the ball in play. Same goes for Varsho, and that’s the way the D-Backs can actually start winning consistently.

At the same time, we can’t be talking about the Marlins being out of sorts because even this 12-10 start for them has gone better than I think anybody anticipated. Aguilar finished with two hits, but eight hits are not going to be enough when you’re scrounging for offense any way you can get it.

But both teams will get a chance to rebound offensively given the pitchers both teams are sending out. Humberto Castellanos is 1-1 with a 5.79 ERA for the D-Backs, while Trevor Rogers gets the nod for Miami with a 1-3 start and 5.09 ERA.

Prediction

Something about the Marlins bouncing back seems like a logical choice here. I like the way they’ve been hitting the ball, and if they keep up this kind of pace, they can string another winning streak together in no time. Marlins win 6-4
