Marlins - Diamondbacks preview and analysis

After one month of baseball, we might be seeing a shift in momentum as it pertains to the Arizona Diamondbacks and Miami Marlins, but we’re also seeing where while this is a good time for both teams, there’s that chance where they’re still learning what it takes to be a good team.

The Diamondbacks are finding that out firsthand after this weekend’s four-game split against the St. Louis Cardinals, but they’ll be trying to get back on track Monday when they start a three-game series Monday against the Marlins in Miami.

Arizona is off to a 10-13 because offense has picked it up at the right time. The D-Backs hit four homers and had a chance to take three of four against one of the perennial contenders in the National League, but the bullpen and errors took a turn late. Nick Ahmed homered for the second straight game, and Jordan Luplow also homered twice.

"He seems like a really good player," Ahmed said of Luplow. "He's played great outfield defense -- center field and right field. He's got a nice arm as you guys could see today and obviously he can swing it. So we're happy he's on our team."

I don’t think anyone can realistically tell you off the street who plays for the Diamondbacks. Not that it’s a terrible thing, but this is what happens when you’re trying to rebuild from the ground up. Once you win, you get more people to follow you, and the three-games-below-.500 mark where they’re at right now is a great way to get people talking. Especially when the National League West is pretty crowded as is right now.

Speaking of playing well enough to get the people talking, the Marlins are certainly in that conversation. Miami is kicking it at three games above .500 despite losing 7-3 and having their seven-game winning streak come to an end. But the Marlins, at the very least, did take two of three over the Mariners.

Jorge Soler went 2-for-5 and hit his third homer of the year, but despite 10 hits throughout the entire nine innings, Logan Gilbert stifled Miami with five strikeouts through 5.2 innings.

“We're still working on it,” outfielder Brian Anderson said after he homered on Sunday. “We're still tinkering with it a little bit, but we're starting to get a little bit of a routine down that's making me a little bit more consistent. That's the ultimate goal, is just consistent, quality at-bats. Over the course of this season, the numbers and everything will be there.”

Prediction

These are the days where I can sit back and enjoy baseball from just watching teams that don’t normally have many stars to watch, but it gives fans the optimism to want to come to the park and watch. And given this could be a chance for the Marlins to rebound at home, I don’t want to think they’ll slow down any time soon. Marlins win 7-5
