Diamondbacks - Reds preview and analysis

The rain could not stop the domination from the Cincinnati Reds. It was all Hunter Greene and nothing else. The Reds, behind a dominant seven innings from Greene, obliterated the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first game of the series on Monday before the game was called due to rain.

Greene gave up a bunt single to begin the game but then retired the next 20 and didn't give up a hit the rest of the way. He also struck out eight on just 87 pitches in what was just a ridiculous game for the young starter.

"That may be the best I've seen him pitch," Reds manager David Bell said. "It was just a great mix of pitches. It makes for an uncomfortable at-bat when he locates his pitches. He got a lot of fly balls. He just set up his pitches really well."

Sure, Greene is now 3-7 on the season, but man did he look good. And the best part for him is he got the offense to boot. Brandon Drury hit his team-leading 10th homer of the season, and Tyler Stephenson and Kyle Farmer also had two RBI each.

"I just didn’t try to do too much tonight,” Greene said, “I just kept it real simple. In some of my past starts, I’ve tried to do a little too much on a pitch. Tonight, I just said, 'Here it is.' I simplified it a little bit. Those pitches turned out where they needed to be."

Not only did Greene strike out eight, but he didn't walk a single batter. It was yet another rough day for the Diamondbacks, whose home-run-heavy offense has gone cold in the last week. Add in the fact that it was another shutout, and it's just something no one wants to watch.

"He was at the top of the zone and we got into a little bit of a wrestling match up there," Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. "You have to cheat to catch that velocity. He made good adjustments and was burying some breaking balls down in the zone. You have to tip your cap."

Madison Bumgarner ended up going for five innings and kept things close before things came off the hinge. He threw 30 pitches in the first inning but was able to get out of it fairly unscathed. He just didn't have the run support.

"I didn't feel like I done good giving up only the two runs," Bumgarner said. "In this particular case, I felt like I was giving up runs I shouldn't have given up."

Prediction

I have a tough time believing in the Diamondbacks right now. They're 20-26 against NL Central teams over the past three years, which is a mark in of itself, but it shows just how bad they've been over the past few games. Until they can put together a game where they can score runs consistently, take the opponents. Take the Reds in another good win for them. Reds win 7-4

Betting trends

Diamondbacks are 4-27 in June over the past three seasons.

Diamondbacks are 41-95 on the road in the past three seasons.

Reds are 3-10 this season at home when the line is between +125 and -125.
