Diamondbacks - Reds preview and analysis

What a rough weekend for the Arizona Diamondbacks. After losing on a walk-off home run on Saturday via Jack Suwinski, the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the D-backs again on Sunday behind three hits from Suwinski in a 3-0 win over Arizona.

Now, the D-backs will try to bounce back after a disappointing series loss by hitting the road and taking on the Cincinnati Reds in the start of a four-game series starting on Monday in Great American Ball Park in the lovely state of Ohio.

Meanwhile, the Reds are coming off losing three of four against the Washington Nationals at home over the weekend. Simply put, we're getting a series featuring two angry teams, especially the group at home that lost to a team that entered this weekend worse than them.

The D-backs were silenced by Zach Thompson's five strong innings of work and four strikeouts. Arizona had only five hits, while Zac Gallen gave up two runs and struk out just four in six innings of work. In short, once again, the offense didn't do anything outside of potential home runs.

Arizona scored one run in the final 20 innings of the series. For that, one giant yikes their way.

"We have to be better, no doubt about it," Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. "We're a very capable offensive team. We have a good approach. We don't try to do too much and have big thoughts. It looked like we were having some big thoughts based on the types of swings I was watching us take."

Arizona has gotten to this point via its pitching, and Gallen has been no exception. Any other day, with any other form of run support, would've been a victory. Alas, that didn't happen and Arizona is in a tough spot.

"My job is to keep us in the game," Gallen said. "We lost today. So, for me, it's a bummer. ... Just tried to keep us in the game, tried to not let the thing unravel."

After taking the first game of the four-game set from the Nationals, the Reds lost its third straight. Sure, it's not the best type of situation for them, but they're at least being competitive. Nevertheless, the Reds are 18-35 this season after a 5-4 loss to Washington on Sunday.

“There is no easy way to lose when they’re doing everything they can to win games," Reds manager David Bell said. “The appearance is that it comes down to one play. That’s not the case at all. There’s a lot of things that went into what happened this weekend.”

The Reds have done a great job fighting out of the standings basement, but there's still a lot ot do to ensure the future isn't a tire fire. That's not a one-year job, either. Much like the D-backs, as well.

Prediction

I don't see the D-backs losing, but I also do because the Reds know they didn't show up at home and have something to prove. Watch for Cincinnati to bounce back. Reds win 8-5
