The battle for the Sun Belt Conference may not come down to this game between the Appalachian State Mountaineers and Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, but at the very least you’re going to figure out who should be the conference frontrunners when this game is said and done.

Sure, you can look at both clubs and say that one is better based on record, of course. Coastal Carolina, known to be a top-25 team for the last couple of years, is sitting at 7-1 but not yet in the vote-receiving category.. That may come in due time so long as CCU gets a much-needed victory against a tough App State club.
Coastal Carolina is coming off a 24-13 win over Marshall last week, and all it took was a 21-0 lead through the first quarter. That’s all that was needed because CCU had just 271 total yards but had possession for 35 minutes out of the 60. Tell me how that makes sense. CCU quarterback Grayson McCall threw for 121 yards and a touchdown, while Marshall quarterback Cam Fancher threw for 320 yards on 19 of 36 passing.
Let’s call it what it is: Coastal Carolina is creeping up there. They haven’t gotten the respect out of the bulk of the voters. The problem is that 49-21 loss to Old Dominion from a couple of weeks ago. That ruined a 6-0 start and ruined any chance at an undefeated type of season. Alas, there’s still plenty of football left to be played, and there’s plenty of time for the Chanticleers to actually put forth a decent run and get a solid bowl. But they have to take down a formidable foe in a team that’s been there before.
Appalachian State has won three of four and is coming off a 42-3 win over Robert Morris over the weekend, and this game was absolutely over in the first quarter. Quarterback Chase Brice threw two of his four touchdown passes in the first 15 minutes. App State went on to outgain RMU 512-148 in just an absurd game of what in the world was that supposed to be?
It’s been a rough season for Appalachian State not squeezing out wins against North Carolina or James Madison. Imagine how that game would’ve looked against UNC had App State finished off that win. Given the year UNC has had, it would’ve been tremendous, really. But at the end of the day, the Mountaineers have gotten to this spot because they deserve it. But as we’ve said the last couple of years, it’s CCU’s time.
Prediction
Coastal Carolina has won 29 of its last 33 games and, in front of the home crowd, is 16-2 in its last 18. This program is too good to let one slip and I think CCU gets the better of App State on this day. The torch will be passed on this day. Coastal Carolina by 7
