Alabama - Ole Miss preview, analysis and prediction

Last week
Alabama: lost 32-31 (OT) at No. 10 LSU
Ole Miss: won 31-28 at Texas A&M

If you have the chance to cut the head off the dragon and put them away for good, you have to do it. Whether Lane Kiffin really believes that to be true or not will be known on Saturday when the Ole Miss Rebels take on the Alabama Crimson Tide in what might be the latter’s final chance to salvage this season. One more loss, and we may officially see Alabama on the outside looking in from not just the College Football Playoff, but the New Year’s Six, as well.

It’s so bizarre that we’ve find ourselves at this point. Two losses in three games has opened the door to officially put an end to what’s been a historic run for the Crimson Tide. Not even just winning championships, but just being competitive for so many years and being one of the last teams standing. It could all end this weekend. Think about it.

For as much as I can make fun of the LSU Fightin’ Brian Kelly Accents, they did what no one thought they could do. They beat Alabama. LSU was the national darlings of the weekend, knocking off Alabama 32-31 in overtime last week in Baton Rouge. LSU’s defense held Bryce Young to 25 of 51 passing for 328 yards and a touchdown; Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 99 yards but Alabama as a whole was held to 137 yards and two touchdowns.

The Tide had no answer for Jayden Daniels with LSU’s quarterback dominating the game with his arm and legs, and they squandered a chance late in the fourth and overtime. Again, Alabama lost. What kind of Upside Down are we in?

"It would be an understatement to say how disappointed our team is," Alabama coach Nick Saban said. "Sometimes, we beat ourselves too much and it's kind of hard to overcome. It was a tough loss, but there's nobody that feels worse about it than the players."

Pretty much that the players were running suicides all week, but that’s neither here nor there. Alabama has gotten this far and has been given one more lifeline. Technically, they’re not out of the SEC title picture just yet, but the coffin is just about closed. They just need Lane Kiffin to bring the hammer down. How likely is that? We have no idea, but we’re about to find out.

The Rebels are coming off a 31-28 win at Texas A&M last week, rebounding after the 25-point loss to LSU. In what might have been the best game so far for quarterback Jaxson Dart, he accounted for 235 total yards and threw three touchdowns in the win. Running back Quinshon Judkins ran for 205 yards and a touchdown, on his 19th birthday, to carry Ole Miss to a strong road win.

"That's very unusual to turn 19 today and be at A&M and carry the ball 34 times," Kiffin said. "That's like Derrick Henry carries when he was winning the Heisman three years older. That's really special."

Prediction

The winner of this game is going to have the better quarterback play. Am I going to go against Bryce Young in this climate? Likely no. But one thing you can never count out is the home team and the power of the crowd. Ole Miss has beaten Alabama at home before. If Ole Miss wants one more shot at the SEC title, they need a win here and close the gap on Georgia, LSU and others. Alabama by 10
