Under former head coach Adam Gase the Jets were 2-14 in 2020.  They were 32nd (last place) in points scored 243, an average of only 15.2 a game.  That turned out to be too many points as they missed out on the chance to draft Trevor Lawrence 1st overall by winning those 2 stinking games. The Jacksonville Jaguars got that honor.  

The Jets had 2796 passing yards (31st) in the 2020 season, while giving up 4409 (which is why Sam Darnold is gone).  The Jets rushed for 1683 yards (23rd) and gave up 1792 yards.  

The Giants were 6-10 in 2020. Passing for 3026 yards (29th) and rushing for 1768 (19th).  

Comparison:

The Los Angeles Rams have Matthew Stafford, The Tampa Bay Buccaneers haveTom Brady, The Detroit Lions will give it a go with Jared Gough… Like the Denver Broncos, these two teams are going to try to make it work with what they’ve got.  Both teams will hope they have it right.  Quarterback Daniel Jones will lead the Giants in a 2021 regular season that may be his last season as the starter.  Zach Wilson was taken, out of BYU, by the Jets in the NFL draft as the second overall pick. This NFL preseason will decide if Zach gets to start from day one like his predecessor (now Carolina Panthers quarterback) Sam Darnold… or maybe he sits a year behind scrubs to develop.   Neither team is gonna put too much pressure on the first preseason games in a scorching hot August… but the pressure will start soon and it will grow.

In the AFC East the Jets have to contend with the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, and New England Patriots while starting a rookie QB led by a rookie Head coach.  Their best week may be their bye week. They will have another hard season.  Hopefully they are done picking quarterbacks in the 1str round for a while.

In the NFC East the Giants are blessed to contend with the Washington Football Team, The Dallas Cowboys, and the Philadelphia Eagles while starting a third year quarterback led by a young, second year head coach who took his bruises last year. If Dak Prescott doesn’t fully recover from this new injury, the Giants best weeks will all be in Division.

If this were the regular season the Giants odds would be through the roof!  Head coach Joe Judge and offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur would wear down the Jets defense with a steady diet of Saqoun Barkley and dumping to the tight end…. But it’s not the NFL season, it’s the preseason.  The known quantities won’t play a lot since both these franchises have a lot to work on.

The Giants have the edge because they aren't the Jets. Also the quarterback play is more experienced, even among the backups.
