Indianapolis Colts vs Houston Texans Preview and Analysis

The Colts are playing their season opener here on Sunday and this will also be their first road game of the NFL season. They finished last season with a 9-8 record overall and were 5-3 in their road games. They were also 3-3 in their division games and finished 2nd place in the AFC South. They ended their season with a 26-11 loss against the Jacksonville Jaguars and ended up missing the playoffs because of that loss. Their offense was averaging 347.1 YPG and 26.5 PPG while their defense was allowing 343.2 YPG and 21.5 PPG against them. Carson Wentz led the team in passing with 3,563 passing yards playing in all 17 games of the season, Jonathan Taylor led the team in rushing with 1,811 rushing yards, and Michael Pittman Jr. led the team in receiving with 1,082 receiving yards. They ended up trading away QB Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders and acquired veteran QB Matt Ryan from the Atlanta Falcons as an upgrade to improve from last season and try to get them to the playoffs this year.

The Texans are playing their season opener here on Sunday and this will also be their first home game on the NFL schedule this season. They finished last season with a 4-13 record overall and were 2-7 in their home games. They were also 3-3 against division opponents and finished in 3rd place in the AFC South. They ended their season with a 28-25 loss against the Tennessee Titans and did not make it to the playoffs. Their offense was averaging 278.1 YPG and 16.5 PPG while their defense was allowing 384.4 YPG and 26.6 PPG against them. Davis Mills led the team in passing with 2,664 passing yards only playing 13 games of the season, Rex Burkhead led the team in rushing with 427 rushing yards, and Brandin Cooks led the team in receiving with 1,037 receiving yards. They are in the middle of a rebuild but with the lack of talent they have on their team they will not be making much of an improvement this season.

Colts vs Texans Prediction

The current betting odds have the Colts listed as an 8 point favorite in this game according to Draftkings Sportsbook. The Colts had a decent year last season but just missed out on the playoffs right at the end. They easily could have made it though as they lost to the Jaguars in their last game of the season which would have put them in the playoffs if they won that game, and the reason they lost was because of Carson Wentz' performance in that game. He has been traded since then and now they have veteran QB Matt Ryan who will be a step up from Wentz for sure. They still have a very good defense under Frank Reich and a solid running game with Taylor in the backfield. Matt Ryan should be able to make more use of their receiving corps as well and they definitely view themselves as a team that can win their division. The Texans are in the middle of a rebuild right now and they are continuing to develop QB Davis Mills in their system as he started most of their games last season. This team has traded away a lot of their defensive talent though, and they have a real lack of talent as well when it comes to their running game and receiving corps. Davis Mills is not that great of a QB either and even if he was very good and highly thought of, he does not have much talent to work with anyway. The Colts will be looking for a big win here on the road to set the standard for the season and get a big division win under their belt already. The best way to place a bet here is on the Colts to cover the spread.

Notable Quotes

“It was pretty good. Probably of all the camps, probably the most similar — just being in a new spot and adjusting to new things, whole new staff, entirely new players. So, there’s probably some similarities to it.” - Matt Ryan on his first day at training camp with the Colts.

"Everybody loves an underdog. He earned this spot. I knew a little bit about him before he got here. We told the guys early on, you come in first round, free agent, we're going to put you all together in drills. Show us, make us put you on this roster and that's what Kurt (Hinish) did.” - Lovie Smith on Kurt Hinish making the roster as an undrafted free agent.
