Red Wings - Islanders preview, prediction and analysis
The Detroit Red Wings will be playing the New York Islanders on Friday, January 27 in New York.
The Detroit Red Wings won against the San Jose Sharks last Tuesday, January 24 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan with a score of 3-2 in overtime. The Detroit Red Wings currently rank 6th in the Atlantic Division as of January 25.
Andrew Copp scored 25 seconds into overtime to give the Detroit Red Wings a 3-2 win against the San Jose Sharks. Copp scored at the right post after James Reimer stopped Michael Rasmussen's shot at the edge of the crease.
"[Rasmussen] said we won a battle, but he's the one who won it," Copp said. "I lost the face-off, but he won the puck battle and drew both guys to him. I just waited for the puck and put it in the empty net."
Rasmussen had a goal and an assist, and Ville Husso made 28 saves for the Red Wings.
"I had [Rasmussen on a line] with [Dylan] Larkin and [Lucas] Raymond, but I put him back with Copp and [David Perron] because they've created some nice chemistry," Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. "I rarely single a player out for an effort, especially on a team where we all need to play well to win games, but [Rasmussen] deserves it tonight."
The Red Wings followed that win over the Sharks with another overtime victory on Thursday, 4-3 over the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre. Moritz Seider continued his hot run with three assists, and Rasmussen had a goal and an assist, the latter coming on Robby Fabbri's game-winning goal 2:36 into the extra frame. Detroit is now at .500 hockey on the moneyline over the last 10 games.
The New York Islanders lost against the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday, January 25 at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa with a score of 2-1 adding a sixth straight loss. The New York Islanders currently rank 6th in the Metropolitan Division. Brock Nelson scored, and Semyon Varlamov made 36 saves for the Islanders.
"We battled. You can't take that away," New York forward Casey Cizikas said. "We battled hard. We worked. It's just unfortunate. We've got to find a way to win these games. It's definitely tough, but we've got to dig deep. We've just got to find a way."
In their past 11 games, the Islanders are 31st in the NHL in goals per game (1.64) and last on the power play (3.7 percent; 1-for-27, two short-handed goals against).
"I thought as the game went on we started to take the game over a little bit, but we just couldn't find the back of the net," New York coach Lane Lambert said.
The Islanders have lost nine of 10 and it's been an adventure to say the least for the folks on Long Island.
Prediction
I wonder if Ville Husso will get a go after seeing just 23 shots in the win in Montreal. If so, then I think Detroit has a chance to sweep the back-to-back. But if it's Magnus Hellberg, I don't know if there's enough offense to win the game. Red Wings 4, Islanders 2
