Bruins - Hurricanes preview, prediction and analysis
Recent results
Bruins: lost 4-3 (OT) at Panthers
Hurricanes: won 5-4 (OT) vs. Sharks
The Boston Bruins will be playing the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday, January 29 in Raleigh, North Carolina.
The Boston Bruins lost against the Florida Panther on Saturday, January 28 at FLA Live Arena in Florida with a score of 4-3 in overtime. The Boston Bruins currently rank 1st in the Atlantic Division.
David Pastrnak scored, and Jeremy Swayman made 33 saves for the Bruins (38-6-5), who are 1-1-1 on a five-game road trip.
Boston has lost consecutive games for the first time this season after also losing 3-2 to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday.
"We got a point, so that's important," Swayman said. "However, I want to be able to close out games in the last final seconds. So not satisfied and we'll definitely make sure we're taking the positives out of this one and move forward."
Craig Smith gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead at 16:50 of the first period when he intercepted an outlet pass by Brandon Montour intended for Eetu Luostarinen in Florida's zone and scored stick side.
Brandon Montour then tied it 1-1 at 8:55 of the second period, deflecting a wrist shot by Barkov from the right circle. It extended his point streak to nine games (three goals, six assists), the longest in Florida history by a defenseman.
Charlie Coyle restored Boston to a 2-1 lead at 17:55 when his centering pass was batted into the net by Panthers forward Sam Bennett.
The Bruins went 0-for-4 on the power play after they were 0-for-2 against Tampa Bay.
"For me, it's the last two games we've gotten outworked," Boston coach Jim Montgomery said regarding the power play. "People are stacking the line against us and ... we weren't willing to put it in behind [them] and go to work and use our feet to go get it behind them."
The Boston Bruins have won seven of their last 10 games.
The Carolina Hurricanes won against the San Jose Sharks on Friday, January 27 at PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina with a score of 5-4 in overtime. The Carolina Hurricanes currently rank 1st in the Metropolitan Division.
Martin Necas scored 55 seconds into overtime after tying the game with 12 seconds left in the third period to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 5-4 win against the San Jose Sharks.
Necas tied it 4-4 on a rebound from the left face-off circle during a 6-on-5, then scored from the bottom of the right circle after receiving a pass from Andrei Svechnikov for the 5-4 final.
It was the second consecutive game Necas scored in overtime, including a 3-2 win at the Dallas Stars on Wednesday.
"When coach puts you out there, that's what you're trying to do," Necas said. "We always feel good for the overtime, you have more space there. It was a 2-on-1 [Friday and a] great play by 'Svech.' I just had to put it in."
Sebastian Aho had two goals, Svechnikov had two assists, and Antti Raanta made 26 saves for the Hurricanes (31-9-8), who have won four straight and extended their point streak to seven games (6-0-1).
"Got your entertainment's worth, that's for sure," Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour said. "It was a great finish. It felt like we were out of it. Obviously, our skill guys got it done."
The Carolina Hurricanes have won six of their last 10 games.
Prediction
Boston let a strong opportunity get away from them against the Panthers, but Linus Ullmark goes for the more important matchup against the Hurricanes, and that seems to be the difference maker here. Bruins 3, Hurricanes 2
