- Kent State has played very good defense this season for long-time coach Rob Senderoff. The two losses for the 6-2 Flashes were very respectable results on the road, losing by two to College of Charleston while losing by only five at #1 Houston. The deliberate pace for Houston played to the strong defensive profile for Kent State with a great ability to create turnovers. Houston lacks the interior scoring presence that Gonzaga has and while the Bulldogs are reeling a bit at only 5-3, this could be a good opportunity to get back on track. Gonzaga has only played two home games this season winning by 41 vs. a decent North Florida team while blasting Kentucky by 16 as Spokane deserves a significant home field edge in this price. While Kent State has good defensive numbers and were caught in a low-scoring grind in their highest profile game, they don’t play at particularly slow pace and Gonzaga should be able to push the pace of this game upward. Gonzaga has had some challenges with turnovers this season as the roster has gone through some transition, but the shooting numbers are exceptional for the Bulldogs and the ceiling on this team remains very high even with the early bumps in the road relative to the past few seasons. Kent State will get a lot of credit for the Houston game, but they were outscored by 15 points after the first six minutes with a flat start from the Cougars. That was an understandable game for Houston to overlook as it was right after Thanksgiving and followed a huge win on the road at Oregon, while it was a very high-profile opportunity for Kent State. The numbers for Kent State are boosted with three wins outside the nation’s top 340 and this is a rare price on Gonzaga at home in a situation where they should be very focused and motivated off a loss.
