- Marquette is just 3-2 and the wins lack quality, but the losses were against top 30 caliber teams by five and three points. The up-tempo Golden Eagles have good depth and Shaka Smart’s second season in Milwaukee could provide decent returns. Marquette has shot nearly 60 percent on two-point shots. Marquette led by four with about seven minutes to go Monday against Mississippi State and that was a game where Mississippi State had a 21-8 edge in free throw attempts while Marquette shot much worse from 3-point range. Georgia Tech’s 3-0 start carried little weight, barely beating Georgia State by two points in the most impressive of those results. On Monday in this Florida tournament the Yellow Jackets lost to Utah 68-64. After falling behind 23-4, Georgia Tech rallied to lead for parts of the second half, but they will be unlikely to have a 19-5 edge in turnovers against Marquette. Georgia Tech has shot just 26 percent from 3-point range this season and has one of the nation’s very worst effective field goal rates even with a favorable schedule so far this season. Josh Pastner’s defense has posted good early season numbers, but this is not an experienced group with only two starters back from last season. Through a similar schedule Marquette has shot 12 percent better in effective field goal rate and 18 percent better on two-point looks, as the edge inside should be significant for the Golden Eagles.
