There were 19 combined strikeouts and the pitching pairing today should be even stronger. Brandon Woodruff has been one of the NL’s top pitchers for a few years when he has been healthy. His K/9 is 11.0 this season and he has a CSW% of 31.0 percent. Woodruff has not allowed more than three runs in a start since returning from the IL in late June, going 4-0 with a 2.18 ERA in seven starts. One of those outings was a 10-strikeout performance on the road vs. the Rays and Woodruff has exceptional home splits with a 2.08 ERA this season and opponents batting .174 against him at AmFam Field. Jeffrey Springs has a 2.50 ERA and a 29.1 percent CSW% this season for impressive results. Like Woodruff, he has high strikeout potential with a 9.4 K/9 but also a very low walk rate. Springs has allowed three or fewer runs in 13 of his 14 starts this season and while Milwaukee has been one of MLB’s better hitting teams since the All-Star break, the Brewers struggle vs. left-handers with a .680 team OPS for the season. Milwaukee is a losing team vs. left-handed starter this season and over the past 10 games the Brewers are averaging just 3.0 runs per nine vs. lefties. The Rays have averaged just 3.3 runs per nine vs. right-handers in that span as this pairing of high-end starters should lead to a lower scoring series finale Wednesday afternoon.
