Analysis
VCU has surged to 10-4 with seven consecutive wins since starting the season 3-4. There is not a great deal of quality in the win column for the Rams on that streak with only a one-point win at Dayton worth mentioning but VCU also defeated Vanderbilt and Syracuse in its seesaw start to the season through one of the nation’s most difficult non-conference schedules. Free throw shooting and turnovers on offense have been issues for this team but Mike Rhoades has maintained the past reputation of the program with a tenacious defense that is currently #1 in the nation in effective field goal rate, #2 in 3-point percentage allowed, and #3 in turnover creation rate. St. Bonaventure finished a half-game ahead of VCU to lead the A-10 standings last season and the Bonnies moved to 1-0 in league play on Tuesday after nearly a month-long layoff. It was not a great performance, needing overtime to beat LaSalle and this squad should be downgraded without being in a consistent mid-season form. St. Bonaventure’s quality rating is built on three consecutive top 50 wins in Charleston in tournament action early in the season, but the Bonnies don’t have a top 100 win since that event way back in November. In the only two opportunities since, they lost by double-digits in mid-December contests vs. UConn and Virginia Tech. The gap in these teams defensively is severe and while the Bonnies do have solid offensive numbers, VCU has won three of the past five meetings between these coaches while +48 in net scoring in those five meetings since February 2019. St. Bonaventure struggled with turnovers in the narrow win on Tuesday against a short-handed LaSalle team that grades at the bottom of the conference as the Bonnies won’t likely perform to their season averages having played just once since December 17 and VCU is not the type of defense one wants to face with an offense that may be out of rhythm. Thank you for playing with Nelly’s and Best of Luck.
