St. Peter's +5.5 (-110) (William Hill)
St. Peter's head coach Shaheen Holloway has transformed a once pedestrian basketball program into one that enters each season with high expectations. Holloway was voted MAAC Coach of the Year following the 2019-20 season and believes this year's squad (five returning starters) possesses the talent to compete with the best teams in the conference. Both teams enter off extended layoffs - St. Peter's hasn't played since December 18, while Monmouth hasn't played since December 22 - so we can expect both squads to be rusty at the outset. However, my math model only favors Monmouth by 4.01 points in this game and the Peacocks are in their preferred role as underdogs where they have posted an impressive 19-7-1 ATS record over the last three-plus seasons (15-5 ATS since 2018). St. Peter's is 4-1-1 ATS in its last six games as a home underdog and the underdog has been a 75% ATS winning proposition in the past five meetings in this series. The trademark of Holloway's teams has always been defense as the Peacocks led the MAAC in defensive efficiency, turnover rate (.229) and 2-point field goal defense (.400) last season. St. Peter's is limiting opponents to just 40.8% shooting from the field this season, including 37.5% on its home floor. Junior forward KC Ndefo, the 2021-22 MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, leads the MAAC with 2.56 blocks per game and ranks sixth in the NCAA among active players in career blocks. Returning sophomore Fousseyni Drame leads the team in rebounds and ranks fourth in the conference with 7.7 boards per game. Overall, St. Peter's is one of the best defenses in the MAAC, ranking inside the top three in the conference in scoring defense (3rd), opponents field goal percentage (2nd), blocked shots per game (2nd) and steals per game (2nd). Grab the inflated number with St. Peter's and invest with confidence.
