Colgate beat Syracuse last weekend on the road as the Raiders have had an impressive 3-2 start that also includes a solid win over Northeastern. Colgate did lose at Cornell early in the season in its last Ivy League pairing but also lost by only three at NC State as the potential of this group is excellent featuring a great deal of returning experience. Colgate shoots at a high percentage all over the floor and is a top 50 team nationally in turnover rate on offense and free throw shooting percentage through a very difficult early season path. Colgate went 14-2 in an abbreviated schedule last season and had an early lead on Arkansas in the NCAA Tournament before the upset bid faded in the final minutes and much of that team is back for Matt Langel, who has a tremendous record since the 2018-2019 season. Tommy Amaker’s Harvard teams are usually Ivy League contenders, and this was a 21-8 team before the pause in March 2020. The Ivy League didn’t play at all lats season however and Harvard as it will take some time to put it all together and two starters are in their first season. Harvard has played a very weak schedule so far to reach 3-2 and two of those wins were against non-Division I teams. The best win came narrowly at Albany, a team grading outside the nation’s top 300 for the moment. Harvard lost Monday at Siena, also a team not in the top 300. Turnovers have been a big issue for an offense that has limited experience playing together and so far despite a weak schedule Harvard has its worst defensive rating since Amaker’s second season in 2008-09. Colgate also had a serious size edge in this pairing with great depth in the paint with three contributors at 6’9” or higher while no player on Harvard’s roster passes 6’7”. This should be a great opportunity for Colgate to score another notable win. Thank you for playing with Nelly’s and Best of Luck.
